I've owned this VW since the year 2000, Which I bought as a car for University. I used it for 4 years and then put it in undercover storage at Laura
in 2004 until my sister was old enough to drive it, as I couldn't bare to sell it. Unfortunately although she loves driving it, she doesn't like
the fact that it doesn't have air conditioning and power steering, and doesn't know much about car mechanics, so she bought a newer Lancer. Now I
have no use for it, and would like someone else to have as much fun as I have driving it.
It is an awesome car for the city, using not much fuel, and being very fast around corners, and a breeze to park because of it's excellent turning
circle. It has excellent traction having wide 14" x 245 wide tyres on the back and 14" x 215 tyres on the front. This is the later model which
also had IRS in the rear, McPherson Strut in the front and front disk brakes which has much better handling and braking that the pre-1971 models. The
Porche Kit includes a rear spoiler, Flared guards and front & rear bumpers.
I bought it from an Adelaide dealership with red faded paint & rust in the floorpan. I worked on it for 2 years adding the following;
* Aluminium checkerplate sideskirts
* Removing rust from floorpan - which included disabling the heater as it was rusted out.
* Repainted "Oxford Blue" in year 2002 with epoxy urethane 2 pack paint, which looks as good now as when I painted it, however there are a few
stone chips around the edges of the mudguards and on the front where the red paint is showing through, and some bubbling under the paint around the
rear window.
* Removed plastic cracked Dashboard and replaced with custom wood dashboard which is stained dark brown.
* Replaced inside of doors with 3 ply marine plywood stained dark brown to match dashboard.
* Replaced stock solex carby with more fuel efficient double barrel Holly Carby.
* Custom Extractor Exhaust System with tuned length headers. This VW does not sound like your normal Vdub.
* Pioneer CD Player
* Rhino Immobilizer and Alarm (battery in remote is dead from not being used in 6 years).
* New black carpet & underlay.
* Repacked front wheel bearings, Rear Wheel Bearings & front brake pads replaced about 10,000km's ago.
The Body is in fair condition, showing signs of bubbling paint around the back window and on the roof. There are a few cracks in the paint, but
overall still looks very good. The front bumper has been cracked along the left side underneath, which you can only see under close inspection. It
does have a few minor rust spots here and there which have appeared while in storage, and since redoing the floor, some rust has appeared underneath
the carpet and under where the battery sits.
The engine has had no work done to it apart from general maintenance and valve clearances. It runs very well, and burns no oil. However, like most
VW's it drips oil slowly, and needs to be topped up once between oil changes which I do every 6000km's.
It has also had a bit of non standard electrical work done to it, which included replacing the main fuse block with a "Spade" type fuses for the
main engine, lights & Starter Circuits. It also has a Kill Switch which needs to be held on while starting for extra Security.
Things that don't work: Odometer, Heater (because it has been disconnected and ports to engine sealed off)... I think that's all...
Other than that, it has been a very reliable car while I've owned it, only braking down once because the distributor capacitor gave up on me.
