HELP!!!! engine problems in beetle
hi all
i have a 65 beetle with a 1500 engine in it,
a few months ago i had the car running ok.....except when it ran for 15 or 20 min it would just cut out and wouldnt start for like 20 min....thats
the first problem
now when i try and start it it will start and idle but it coughs and splutters and the moment i touch the throttle it cuts out....i have emptied the
fuel tank and put fresh fuel in.... any ideas?

Check the choke is not stuck on
Check that the accelerator pump in working
You may need to take the top off the carby and give the jets a good blow out.
Whilst you have the top of the carby off check the needle and seat is working too.
That's for starters

SOUNDS LIKE IT MAY BE FLOODING
when You touch the accelerator...
the choke is hooked to power so it switches itself OFF...
so that shouldn't be the problem,
If an engine IS flooded .. You can start it BY holding the accelerator to the floor... this opens the flap in the carburetor letting the maximum flow
of air into the engine...
I have some carburetors that have a ball valve sticking because old petrol was left in it...
and it won't allow fuel to the accelerator pump...
so, they idle perfectly but won't rev....
If You can get it to idle again, take the air filter Off and look down into the throat of the carby...
if the needle and seat are sticking OPEN then You will see fuel overflowing into the throat odf the carburetor and this will FLOOD the engine...
and the engine will stop...
was it in gear when it cut out???
as when a carby idles OK but won't drive... its usually the ball valve stick closed and the accelerator pump is not working..
so... either too much or not enough Fuel....
or the timing is out??? points and distributor need adjusting.

i would say that your needle and seat are sticking other than that pull the carby of and a good clean with compressed air to blow out all the
galleries and jets

yeh second prob diffidently sounds fuel related.The first problem thou,running and then cutting out,not running for 20mins.
Sounds similar to a problem i had with my coil.Just a stab in the dark,but the coil would get hot and just die.If you waited 20min
or half an hour she would start.Just an idea.Replaced the coil and never had the same problem again.But yeh... check carby first up.

It doesn't take 15-20 mins for the carb to flood if the needle and seat are crook, and you'll know if it is cos the car will reak of fuel.
Its either lack of fuel or lack of spark, lack of fuel is heat related.
Usually it's just vapour lock or if the fuel pump is getting a bit weak they stop pumping when they get hot, had that once.
After it all cools down its ok.
Wet rag round the fuel line and fuel pump help speed things up if thats what it is.
Lack of spark is like Jason said, when the coil gets hot sometime they randomly cut out then work once cooled down.
Had 2 different GT40s do that to me.
If you have someone handy to crank it over next time it happens see how strong your spark is, should easily jump about 10mm.
With this idling but dying on throttle, look down the carb throat and make sure the little brass discharge tube is there pointing down the throat.
Should give a good shot of fuel when u pump the throttle.
they have a habit of falling out and getting swallowed by the engine.

could be a number of things, but since u said it was running for some time and then playing up once it was warm, i would lean toward it being the
coil, thats how tired ones behave.... hard to say for sure, but its a cheap and easy place to start... if it continues, i would check the valve rocker
adjustment and the spark plugs, make sure they are clean, not cracked and that the gaps are correct.... i doubt it would be anything else, but next on
the list would be a thorough clean of the carby and possibly a rebuild kit... old VWs can be tempremental at times, but they are pretty simple to sort
out, there only is a limited number of things that can go wrong (air, fuel spark). hope that helps cheers adam
