Weber upgrade
Just upgraded my daughters beetle to a Weber progressive 32/36. I have to say this has transformed the car. No more flat spots, accelerates hard,
pulls through hills I had to change down before. If you've been mucking around like I had, trying to get your car running right on the Pict carb,
look at one of these. Under $400 delivered from the states it gives you great bang for your buck.

im assuming the one you got has the vacuum secondary and electric choke. that was the only down side to the one i had well that and the fuel
consumption.

Ive got one on my 1640 (recently rebuilt). I've always thought the fuel economoy could be better plus it just felt like it was never quite 'right'.
Then i came across this on The Samba which seems to answer all my queries.

Weber upgrade
The kit I have fitted is a Redline K1410 kit with the premium linkage and heated manifold. This manifold as I understand is ported up to the base of
the carby to allow better heat from the risers. It is a weber kit not an Empi.
Part #VW T-1, up to 1835cc. I don't know about fuel consumption yet, and probably don't have a real comparison as I didn't do many miles with the
stock carb. I have no idea what jets it was supplied with from factory, and have no intention to pull it down while it is running well. Just bolted it
on, followed the tuning instructions with the Idle speed screw and Idle Mixture screw and it feels good!. I am running a 009 distributor, so the
vaccum port is blocked with the supplied cap. The only thing I think I can still improve is the cold starting. It is not quite as happy to idle of
first start as the old carb, but I think I can still tune it better.

I'm interested to see how well this carb works for you as the cold weather kicks in.
I've had a lot of experience with these carbs on Toyotas and Geminis and they are not normally that hard to jet. I think I even have a stash of jets
still somewhere.
The main reason I haven't fitted one to my bug is I've been told they don't work well on air cooled VW's. I guess a lot of that is the manifold
heat riser design.
In the centre of the pic above you will see the choke end of the carb. On the right side is a casting held by three screws. It's the bit closest to
the manifold in the pic. In the centre of that casting there should be an adjustment screw for idle when running on the choke. It may be under a
plastic cover. Simply screw in to increase cold idle speed.

if i was going to put one on again thats the manifold id be after. mine was a pig for the first 5 minutes till it warmed up then it ran like a dream.
the only thing i didnt like was the adjustment screws were against the fan shroud. i fixed it by fitting the lada niva copy which has them all at the
front of the carb.

As with any centre manifold set-up in the VW it relies on manifold heat. VW went to great lengths to ensure that the manifold would be warm with warm
air by-passes, exhaust pre heating, automatic chokes, thermostats etc...

i bought mine from redline years ago but thats not the manifold that they supplied (preheat not up to the carb base, no extra linkage). I guess
they've changed it since. I bought my new manifold recently (same as your pic) from Aircooled.net.
What exhaust have you got? the preheating is kinda useless with a "standard" aftermarket header, ie you need either a stock muffler or a modified
header

Thanks Brett for the info on the choke idle adjustment, I'LL have to have a look cause it could definately use a bit higher idle on choke. The
manifold is classed as the deluxe model from Redline so you can still also get the non heated version. My exhaust is original so risers are conected.

What a great looking kit! It looks like they have finally sorted this system out. It's the manifold heating which is critical.

I used to have that set up...
aside from powering on in left hand corner where fuel was just surging to one side it was good
then i made my own manifold that turns it 90degree
and now only problem is what barl mention that it run like pig for the first 5 min then it's good

any chance of a bigger pic of the installed setup? particularly the throttle linkage area would be good
did you have any issues with the throttle returning to fully closed?
perhaps the linkages and springs on my carb are a bit gunked or lost their springiness
