Brakes,bleeding,god dam it!!


Hi Guys.
A few weeks ago i blew a brake hose.Will fewer explain in a separate thread later on.Anyway i replaced the brake hose and the line for that side,as they were both a bit how ya going.
Anyway long story short,we bleed the brakes and can never get it right.It has brakes now,but im not happy.It nearly hits the floor before brakes engage and they are not the tightest.Just wondering if anyone can help me out in making the brakes that little bit tighter.Is there another way to adjust the brakes apart from bleeding over and over until all the air is out.Im on lunch brake..lol.Can explain more later.

I don't know if this would apply to vw's, but on motorbikes getting a syringe and pumping fluid into the brake bleed value forces the air up as it naturally wants to go.



Thats not rust, it's ah ... orange primer ... yep that's what it is ...

oh ok,yeh i guess it makes sense doesn't it.I'm actually starting to think master cylinder, much to my disapproval.:fakesniff:i have heard it quite common
for masters to go after bleeds.so will price one.Just to see.Are master cylinders hard to put in? i gather you have to remove the fuel tank.
Make things alot easier.
Looks forward to some responses.

you should replace all the 4 flex rubber hoses

Hi
it will take You 3-5 bottles of brake fluid to bleed beetle brakes and type 3s..
it may NOT be Your Master Cylinder...
a bubble of air IN the master cylinder will cause that problem.

undo the brake switches slightly and bleed them..

do the brakes furtherest away from the master cylinder [LHS] and then RHS rear, then Left hand front etc......

jack the back of the car up to allow all the air to run to the rear... leave the bleeder open for 15 minutes or more..
then do the other side...

If I was You I would replace the other 3 brake hoses... as they are all the same age...

Plus the rear brake cylinders if you can afford it...
Best to get all those out of the way... in one go... lol..

and one bleeding.. lol

PS: Master cylinders are fairly easy to replace...
held in place by 2 bolts.... has the two hoses on the top which will need to be cut off and replaced by the same blue hose.. VW ONLY HOSE ...
and take the brake switches and brake pipes off and reinstall.

I use gloves when using brake fluid... its horrible feeling stuff on Your hands,,,

it can be done with tank in or out...
better with it out naturally... LEE

the other 3 hoses are new in terms of hoses.Were replaced about 2 years ago.In good condition.
The reason i had to replace this one is becuase we found that the small slab that i drive up and down from
where i park the beetle was slowly chaffing the hose.We did not know this until it was too late.
So check your hoses.:yes:

I have a vacuum brake bleeder, works first time, you might be able to hire one. your master cylinder might be a problem, when you bleed the brakes buy depressing the pedal the piston goes to the bottom of the master cylinder were the bore might be rusty, this damages the seals in the master cylinder.

yes,i have been told this by several people.Vee dub and non vee dub.I priced a new master cylinder from rohan,and they are reasonably priced.just depends when i can afford to take her off the road.

lol yeh,,i need her to drive to my apprenticeship.lol
will have to wait though for a couple more pays.:fakesniff:
the brakes are actually a lot less spongier today.dont know
if that is reality or im just getting used to it.;)

I recently had all my discs machined (all 4), new pads, new brake hoses, and wheel cylinders re-done on my L bug. The brake shop were worried that the pedal was quite low, but said to see how it went and that it may come up. By the time I had driven from Orange to Port Macquarie and back, they were fine - best they have ever been I reckon.

are you using a one way valve when bleeding? Make sure you aren't letting any air back in. I can usuLly do themyself once I get set up. Most auto placesbsell them with a tiny tiny little bottle that is useless, so I just take the lid that's the valve an place it inside a two liter bottle and bleed plenty of fluid through each wheel get pretty happy with pedal fee and then do it again just to be safe you will know when it is done right. Have you adjusted your drs without the handbrake on? Rember you actually have to release all the slack so that it is not holding any tension ! GOod luck

I have never heard of anything relating to the hbrake.so the handbrake was on when bleeding.Sorry i didnt quite understand did you mean Drivers Right hand side.?
