Basic welding workshop

Just throwing it out there, if there were such a thing would anybody be interested in a basic welding workshop.

Classes would be small and would cover basic welding, enough for those who want to learn to work on their own stuff, instruction by experianced tradesman, probably staring with mig welding.

What do you think?

Yes TAFE does have courses available, but they are usualy certificate courses that span over a year or two ( I maybe wrong).

I'm just curios as to weather people would be interested in say a weekend workshop that would give you enough info to continue at home on a project you might want to start but don't have basic skills to do so.

Just an idea at this point in time.

In the whitlam years? shit grumble you've probably forgotten it all by now:D

i did one (rural welding it was called) during the Hawke years. if your keen to learn, then they are very worthwhile. But I dont think they run things like this anymore.

Could be wrong though.

Bloody hell Brenden I am not that old (I think) mine were trade courses and sponsored by the generous people of Australia as a goodwill gesture of my mate :no:Gough.(there is not much of benefit that that govt did but this is one)
As my wife was posted to a school 100km away by some whacker I had a sh..load of time to do all of the post trade courses at no cost. This worked out very well and helped me in my job and subsequent business. There were downsides to it but we will not mention that.
If you can get he numbers this wil be a worthwhile achievement. Cheers Les

This might take a little time to organise, we just trying to get a feel for interest at this stage, there will be a cost involved but not too rude, its an idea that might be good for the inthusiast that wants to get involved with their own project and be proud of thier own achievements, and save a little money in the long run.

Forget the previous posts, will you be running this as an educational course . This sounds like a great idea and I hope you get a lot of enthusiasts.

great idea!

I organised something similar last year at our shop and we had a bunch of suppliers come and do demos on welding, grinding & cutting wheels, english wheel metal forming etc and it was a great night. My shop sells, amongst other things, welders and welding equipment and I always get asked about welding tips and diy classes. If there is enough interest in Brisbane I am happy to co-ordinate something up here.

Lowbug, I'll start another thread for the Brisbane guys and I would be happy to share any ideas etc with you if you want to do this. What do you think? what about some feedback from the Brisbane guys?

Ok, so some interest has been shown. In order to get a feel for what you want in such a workshop, what is it that you would like to achieve by the end of it, keeping in mind that it is based on basic welding skills to start with.

Pretty much the same for me too. If I can do some basic rust repairs and small fab work, that would be great.

Ditto for me, just want to do some some basic rust repairs and some simple fabrication.

TAFE courses are too long and too expensive, and I'm not trying to get a qualification, just be able to do more work on my beetle and therefore enjoy it more and have a sense of satisfaction that I did myself.

I'm keen whenever you have details.

Cheers
Craig

Yeah I'd been interested in it also depending on date/location. Would be keen on learning how to adjust MIG settings properly and technique for good butt welds in sheet metal. Plus some tips for managing heat distortion.

Thats not rust, it's ah ... orange primer ... yep that's what it is ...

These are all the things we want to address in a "basics workshop", now that we have a positive responce we will be working on plan to make available such a weekend workshop. As soon as we can put together some details we'll let you know. Keep in mind that these workshops will be kept small in numbers to enable one on one learning.

Keep posting the things you want from such a workshop keeping in mind we want keep it simple at first covering basics so you can take the info home and start putting it into practice.

Have you thought about oxy welding?

I know it's not that popular these days, but I prefer oxy for a nice neat weld on exterior panels. If done correctly, distortion is not a big problem.

In the Menzies years, at Ultimo Tech, we learned oxy welding - there was no MIG or TIG..........Stop laughing, you lot!
