Epic fail!


just for a laugh. Its amazing people turning down a repro RHD dashes for type 3. Gota admit most of the ranting is me though:lol:

I think this is good though, turning down inferior parts is what I ultimately like to see in any auto market. but in the VW market? wow thats amazing :lol:

Lots of parts were Australian made so I wonder if Australia had it's own tooling for that too? It's probably out there.

Who made it back then?????????

For an original RHD dash I bet they could sell 100 of them straight up.

If your doing a nice resto or building a show car then yeah you pay the $600+ and get Dashboard Dr to reskin the original and its good for another 30 years but of the type3s still on the road the vast majority are just peoples daily runabouts/cruisers not $2million Veyrons so for all those people this is a cheap effective alternative.

Wouldn't look as good but most people would be happy to just have a dash that didn't look like a lion was locked inside and went to town on it.

You Can't really use a VN-VP Commodore as an example, 90s aussie cars have woeful build quality.
Actually even beyond that they didnt get much better, my 02 XR6 was a dodgy piece of crap too but if you compare a similar era Jap or European car, even one that has spent it's life outside the dash may have discoloured slightly but they rarely crack.

Presses and dies deteriorate if not kept and maintained properly. They also need warehouse space. That costs money. It is much more cost effective to get scrap metal value once OEM requirement is no longer required by the manufacturer.

yep $600 sound about right. I say it worth it. but for just a re skin? I think not.

yeah you're right about the euro and jap cars :) but they don't use ABS for their dashes. it's some sort of rubber like material.

I will post a DIY soon if i see the end of this dash resto i'm doing at home.
Inc. cracked foam removal and levelling, free hand carving of demister vents.
its not too bad of a job. Although at every stage i have asked myself 'wtf have i started'...
bit if it works, i will let yas know :). So far its looking tidy.

Its simply a collaboration of alot of diy ideas I have read that don't seem bodgey, and if the end result works it proves its worth :), and it doesn't involve stupid things like using bog and glass to fill foam cracks :mad:

I customised an old L bug dash, had it re-skinned at dashboard restorations in Brisbane, and fitted it about 6 years ago. VERY happy with it.
