IDA help (previously) IDA love (now)
More help requests later in the post.
I'm intending to run some IDAs because they're cool.
I've got some short SCAT manifolds and a CB Performance hex bar linkage which I just discovered are not a good combination.
The SCAT manifolds have the carbs 180 degrees out from where the linkage requires. The adjustment screws and float bowl plug face the fan. The linkage
rotates to the outside rather than inside.
What's the best solution?
Plan A get CB Performance manifolds. But they'll be too tall and I don't want to modify then engine lid.
Plan B get CSP short manifolds. BUT they're $389 + freight.
Plan C stick with the scat manifolds and get a Berg GB 451 linkage which apparently works with these manifolds.
I hear short IDA manifolds are hard to find.

CT, You might try getting lugs welded on your current manifolds , drill and tap them suit to your studs, opposite to the current stud pattern to turn
them around. If you have a look at some Berg manifolds asa guide, they already have this feature so that the carbs can be used either direction - H

I think either making or welding adapter lugs may be the fastest option,
especially if you like acces to your mixture screws.
Welding will require remachining to keep flat where the gaskets go,
which should be easy for who ever drills and taps the new part.

I've done two recently with these manifolds, both we used the Berg linkage. I like the linkage so decision was easy.

What about a simple cantilever? Use the good hex linkage you have now, but then drive a cantilever cross-over linkage from that to push the throttle
blades. Easy to weld onto your manifolds a couple of pivots, and a couple of adjustable small heim rods.
Bit of mucking around when the Berg linkage will work though.

Can't do Pagey. (within reason)
IDA's only have one end for lingage/throttle stop.

I'm warming to the idea of a Berg linkage despite being a miserable miser ; ) . I'll call them tomorrow and see if they have stock and can get the
thing here in reasonable time. I've never ordered anything from Berg before.
Since the car is driven mostly on the street I'm quite pedantic about the mixtures being right. So having the mixture screws facing inwards makes
sense.
I've always wanted to try a Berk linkage, oops Berg.
I tried swapping all the bits around as Pagey suggests but with no luck.
I also looked at the clever linkage suggested by Gracey which was tempting but doesn't suit the old-school flavour I'm sticking with.

I've got a few things cooking at the moment in my oval's mechanical makeover (More of a large casserole on low heat rather than anything from a
microwave).
I must say thank you to all those who've posted their comments here.
I've been blown away by the help I've received from Rod Penrose, Henry Spicak, Marty Staggs, Alan Agyik and Jak Rizzo (Despite the latter having a
subaru engine). They've all helped me above and beyond the call of duty tracking down and figuring out the parts I've been chasing.
I can see why I've been into VWs for two decades and still love it. The people in the scene are awesome.
Bring on the Tamworth Hillclimb, VW Nationals Supersprint and Warwick Drags.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the images. I tried a Scat Linkage yesterday and it seems to work pretty well.
As usual I had to make a few mods. I had to clearance the underside of the alternator stand a few mm. I also had to shorten the arm to the 1/2
cylinder side by about 12mm (A further 8mm will be needed to put the locknuts on). This required drilling and tapping a deeper thread into the arm.
The linkage is a bit stiff and I'll have to build a bracket for the return spring, but I should be able to get it to work. Now, to finnish porting
the manifolds and put a kit through the carbs.

Nothing looks cooler than old school IDA carbs.
I think with your car theme it,s a perfect fit and you,ll love the roar when you mash the throttle.

Labour of love
Nice engine bay Colin. Greg was amazed that when he arrived at the Bathurst Hillclimb that you had time to polish your wheels. I assured him that
you've got much more time than that. Just look at your car. It's a work of art.
I think it took 3 hours a side to port and flatten the mating surfaces of these manifolds. Thankfully they're done.
The gearbox and engine go back in on Friday with Jak Rizzo's help. I doubt I'll get the thing started next weekend though. There are all sorts of
tricky details to sort. They somehow stack up. Whenever you modify just one thing you end up having to modify half a dozen others.

The engine and gearbox went back in the car today. But the IDAs are raising a few questions.
I managed to inspect the shaft bearings and accelerator pump pushrod. They're in good nick. The bearing grease was dry so they will enjoy the new
grease I packed them with.
Can somebody help me with a specification for setting the bottom and top float levels?
Also I think the rebuild kit I got was crap. The needle and seat are completely different (useless), the base gaskets are too small and the stud holes
are too close together, it comes with washes that don't fit anywhere and there are no O-rings for the fuel pump squirters. The top gasket fits
perfectly though.
Are there different kits for different versions of IDAs?
What gives?
Should I have faith in fibre washers keeping the banjo fittings fuel tight?

I have seen those Banjo fittings shake loose and leak , you need to keep an eye on them.
Those needle valves are wrong . I do have the float level guages at work , if no one else posts them up I will.
