A Thunderbird extractor setup is the usual replacement. In my experience they are quieter then stock.

If you get the chance to inspect first... i would look for something with thick flanges. This usually denotes some level of quality.

4 tip Monzas sound sweet but they are a performance killer due to the poor design, worse than a stock muffler.
If you want a loud throaty roar with good performance get a 4 into 1 header and put a hotdog muffler on.
I did that with a 2.25" Mercury Torpedo muffler.
Just quiet enough to be legal but still used to set off car alarms in undercover carparks.

Do some research into the order the pipes join and exhaust flow... apparently the cheap ones rob horsepower by poor design and thats a lot of the main
exhausts...

4 tip
Just a note on the 4 tip. I recently put one on and it sounds good but the welding was certainly not up to the standard seen on Kmart bicycles - not
kidding. It needed to be ground down inside the flanges as there was crud galore. If you pick one up from the shop, inspect it first.
Also - if you have children.
My 18 mth old son was "helping Dad" work on the car the other day. Now I cannot find my 20mm socket. Today I noticed that the exhaust tips have
blackened up - 3 of them - one is still really clean. I think I know where my 20 mil is. Next time I'll get one that points down.

4 tip update
Did not find my socket up number three tip, but shone a torch in there and saw more abysmal welding restricting the outlet.
I think I'll get a different one next time.
Still looking for my socket though.

I doubt they would fit, as they're designed for upright motors, all the type3 headers bow outwards to clear the tinware.
Funny you should say that Matt, those systems do give a lawnmower type note.

After reading this I feel terrible for throwing away my hotdog, I used it on many stock 1600. It really improved performance and often had lots a
crackle on deceleration with the odd flame!
I wonder if HypoVW still has it???
Tuned Type IV power - shaking out the rust.
