I hate when I find something I would like to view and am forced to join just to look at maybe one photo. So I think this will tell you which way I voted.

thanks guys, another very honest reason is that we have all spent alot of time updating our "build threads" and the thought that only users can see them is annoying, would u be annoyed if you couldnt show your pride and joy?

thanks again

If you use photobucket and link the pictures in anyone can see them. That's why I do it this way, plus you can add more than 3 pictures per post too.

Mmmm, not a bad idea. I'd reckon it's set up the way it is so the site gets more members. Afterall, the amount of sponsor $$ are related to numbers of members. It doesn't cost to join so it's not a big deterent, if a non member wants to see the pics they can just join up.
Photobucket is a great way of doing pics, you can put in descriptions or whatever with better size pics.

I understand what you are saying and I have had to join many forums to see a one photo.

Here is an example why I think it is a pain to have to join - I was after a fuse block for my VW and the one I wanted was a from a marine company and I could only get it overseas. I did a search and found a guy in Oz that imported one and was selling it. I couldn't see the photo as I wasn't a member, so I had to join a fishing forum just to confirm it was the right part.

Yes, I guess there are many reasons why we have to join a forum to see photos. But just as there are many of us here with different opinions on which way it should be. We are all entitled to say or think what we would prefer as this is obviously a voting thread.

Cheers, Kev.

It's obviously just a software setting cos it never used to be like this.
Up till a few years ago the pics used to show up even if you weren't logged in.
Must admit it is annoying at times if you're not logged in.

But as mentioned photobucket is much better.

One thing I will say on the subject though is it possible to have auto image reducing like nearly all other forums do? like thesamba, VZi, sbo etc?

It's just handy when someone posts a 300000000x4444444444 pixel image then all the people responding who don't know what the enter key is for have really hard to read messages as you have to keep scrolling right.

If I recall rightly it was changed because the site was getting attacked by hackers, and that was one way that Andrew could reduce their chances of success.

I think at the time he did mention about changing it back once the attacks stopped, so you'd need to contact him about it.

From my understanding, this "restriction" only appears to be with photos hosted on this website/forum.
If this is the case then I think that's fair enough. Why should other people/website use up this forums bandwidth? Some people may also not like the idea of non members seeing their photos also (some people can be funny that way).

As others have mentioned if you(in the abstract sense) want non members to be able to see photos in your threads/post, then you can always host your pictures externally and just paste the links in like I and many others already do.

I find it lets me know I am actually not logged in. I don't see it as a problem. I have joined other sites just to see a photo or 2 and liked what was there so I kept going back to them. Maybe the same happens here.

Yeah it might suck to og in again sometimes, but it would ensure many more members... its a double sided coin, i doubt people mind others seeing thier photos, but it is more so a members and advertising scheme...
