Up until mid 1960.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

They were deleted on 1 Aug 1960, chassis number 3 192 507.
The start of the 1961 year model was 1 Oct 1960, chassis number 3 335 848.

and they were called trafficators...
never semaphores... only in the USA...
and they had blinkers from 1955 in the USA...
bullet type on the front and the stop light blinked Red...
aka 1956 FE holdens also had the stop lamp flashing....
although it may have been an optional extra .. lol

Semaphores seems to be widely used in Australia and the UK. (have a look at pre67 - I did a search for "semaphore" and it returned 20 pages of
hits)
So you are correct, but practically semaphore is IMHO the most widely used term and I am going to keep using it. Using "trafficator" is just going
to get blank e-stares from people who have no idea what you are tallking about.
If we are going to get all AVD, then they aren't "blinkers" they are "flashing direction indicators"

In the early '60s, I worked for two different VW dealers. We called them SEMAPHORES. Doesn't really matter what you call them, as long as they work!
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

[size=4]Yes
Blinkers were actually used on horses.... and still are ....
in horse racing...
so, We have trafficators...
semaphores were traffic signals in the USA in the Very early years they worked just like two trafficators..
one was STOP and one was GO.
but trafficator is not in the USA english language...
trafficators were also used on many UK cars.... BMC austin Morris riley wolseley etc
and Flashers or flashing directional indicators lol
BUT hockey stick and doghouse is used everywhere... lol
but engine/gearbox/transaxle mounts are NOT called bananas or banana mounts..?? lol
IMHO {in My humble opinion...]

When I got my licence (S.A. 1964) I had to still use hand signals at stop signs etc even though the Vanguard I was driving had
semaphores/trafficators, did anyone else have to do this (sorry for the thread hijack!) The Policeman was of a "mature" age though but then there
were heaps of cars, not only veedubs, which had semaphores and trucks had the hinged fake arms which extended out for turning. My brother-in-law
bought a 1959 beetle new and it had trafficators, this car started my interest in beetles.

In pre-radio days "semaphore" was a signalling system with arms or flags from hill top to hilltop or ship to ship, used by the military in world war

When I got my licence in NSW in 1974, I had to do the arm signals.
Incidently, the 1959 beetle I had then had blinkers on the B pillar where the semaphore arms usually go. I had seen a lot of them like that around at
the time.

I was in the town of Semaphore in South Australia Last year...
There are light houses and semaphore poles or whatever they are called..
in a triangle where the semaphores used to be hung to signal ships.... these are always on a hill too...
LEE
How trafficators came to be called semaphores ?????

I got My licence in QLD in Texas... around 1967...
most trucks still had the extending hand Stop or turn right signal...
those hands would be called dangerous these days.... lol
I had those B pillar HELLA blinkers on My 1959 beetle too..
I still have one of those here somewhere.. maybe 2.. lol
LEE
PS: I was at a servo in Scone a few years ago, and an older woman in a Morris Minor had just gotten Her car passed for Rego.. as She
pulled out of the driveway...
OUT popped the Trafficator....
The Mechanic said." I told her those are illegal and NOT to use them" Lee
