Distributor Pinion
Hi, It seems that the distributor pinion has been installed incorrectly for my engine. It is a 1600sp. My question is. Is there a way to remove the
pinion without splitting the case so I can line it up properly. Thanks

You can get a distributor drive puller, it's like a T handle tool thing, I actually borrowed one from mick motors a few years ago, Just left a
50dollar deposit and picked it up when i took the tool back.

Hi Steve, It comes out about half way I guess but then feel as if it is hitting something solid. I going to try and get hold of a tool to make it a
bit easier to handle.

The fuel pump and its pushrod guide need to be out. If still only coming partway out, look down the fuel pump hole and with a long screw driver, keep
the small shims down on the seat of the dissy drive. The shims jamb into the brass gear and stop the drive.

Thanks Matberry, got it out today and realigned it but now it is backfiring through the exhaust. Thought it may of been the carb so put a another one
on but not different. Any ideas.

First thought is triple check the firing order asuming the back fire is during acceleration and quite bad/obvious.

Thanks mate. I put a new dizzy on today, an electronic ignition swap. It seems to have stopped while idleing but now it backfires under accelaration
and when you hold the throttle down at constant revs it seems to break down and start to backfire and die. Just to make sure on firing order it is
1432 right.

Yep, 1432 is correct, have you a multi-meter to check plug lead resistance, are the plugs fresh???

No plugs not fresh might go get some tomorrow what do you recommend just in case the ones in there are not the right ones. What should the the leads
read at. Thanks for you help.

If the heads are original type the plugs should be Bosch W8AC. Plug leads should be wire/copper core with resistive ends (stock bakerlite type) as the
coil and distributer rotor are designed for this type of lead, not a silicone lead. Resistance should be between 1k and 5k ohms each lead, coil lead
zero and rotor 5k.

ok Pretty sure that the heads are stock but the coil and distributor are not. I have just put on a flame throw electronic ignition and but it was
already backfiring before that. The coil is a bosch gt I think and the leads are silcone but I believe these leads have been on for a bit. I looks to
me as it is running rich as the plugs and the exhaust are sooty black. I change the carb to another but that didn't fix it so I went back to the
original. The carb is a H30/31 PICT jetted to 120. I was thinking it was running lean that why it was backfiring but the sooty black plug etc don't
surport that idea. I guess maybe if the plugs are wrong which I think they are as they are not what you said above are the plugs that are in it, it
may not be burning the fuel properly they igniting in the exhaust.. I believe the motor is a 1600 SP. It also converted to 12v.

120 sounds like to small a main jet. I'd be going to at least 130, maybe 135.

Ok I think it is all sorted. Thanks smilely I was thinking that it was running lean but the plugs are black and sooty so I didn't want to put a
bigger jet in just yet. Anyway replaced plugs, leads, and coil to one for electronic ignition and she seem to be back to normal although I think the
float level or needle may be sticking so will give the carb a overhaul and hopeful all good, then if it is running lean then I will change the jet.
