VW's sleek-looking Golf-based coupe, the Scirocco, will arrive Down Under early next year.
Volkswagen Group Australia has confirmed its sleek Golf-based Scirocco coupe will finally go on sale in the first quarter of next year after an
unveiling at Melbourne's Australian International Motor Show in July.
A single range-topping "R" performance variant will be available, coinciding with the quiet departure of the three-door Golf R - its mechanical
equivalent - to avoid any potential sales cannibalisation.
Consequently, expect the front-wheel-drive Scirocco R to be priced similar to the outgoing Golf R's $48,490 price tag (plus on-road and dealer costs)
- well above the Golf GTI - while the five-door version of the Golf R continues unabated from $49,990.
Volkswagen managing director Anke Koeckler says the style-led Scirocco has always been on the cards with a strong business case, particularly given
that one in four Golf models sold in Australia is a performance-oriented GTI. Other variants, including the cheaper, Golf GTI-engined Scirocco GT,
however, will not see Australian shores.
Ms Koeckler says continued strong demand from customers and dealers, combined with favourable exchange rates, helped the approval process.
Apart from the absence of all-wheel-drive grip, the Scirocco R and its Golf equivalent share the same platform and engine, albeit with the GTI's
"XDS" electronic differential to aid grip out of corners. Also expect Volkswagen's variable dampers fitted as standard which switches between
normal, comfort and sport modes at the press of button.
Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Scirocco R produces 188kW at 6000rpm and 330Nm from 2400rpm and will be available with
both six-speed manual and dual-clutch automatic transmissions.
At 1333kg (auto 1353kg), it's also a substantial 143kg lighter than the three-door Golf R, though this may change with Australian-specific models.
The four-seat coupe sprints to 100km/h in 6.0 seconds according to official figures, making it fractionally slower than the Golf R, which manages the
dash in 5.9 seconds as a manual and 5.7 seconds in dual-clutch auto form.
The Scirocco was first seen in production guise at the Geneva motor show in 2008 while the 'R' version made its global public debut at the
Nurburgring 24-hour endurance race in May 2009.

^^ this guy, thought he was too busy for vw's these days
the ones your seeing are imports from NZ through import yards, not new through vw, no warranty/service support from vw supposedly... big risk.
