wtd - 12v generator

The 12v generator on my Country Buggy (Type 1 1200) has a chewed out pully assembly - the lugs on the pully that key in to the generator are no longer functional. Are they able to be changed, as it charges fine ? If not does anyone have a 12v generator or bought one lately.

Cheers.

Peter

Micks Motors should be able to help you out with a new pulley and key.

I have a SH Generator, but no Pulley.

The Semi circle locating piece is called a woodruff key and the journal it sits into on the shaft of the genny needs to be checked carefully to see it has not been flogged out too otherwise just replacing the Pulley it will fail again.

Suggest a new Pulley, but try for an original slotted one not one that just relies on the flat sided locating lugs of the rear pulley.

Cheers,

David

Hi Pete
Just about every one into Beetles should have a spare or two laying around especially anyone who has either wrecked cars or engines..
or has changed over to an alternator...
I gave one away a couple of days ago to a local..

they are very heavy so getting one local is the way to go.

or getting replacement pulleys is the way to fix Your problem..

and Micks motors or just about every VW parts shop would have them...

Re reading Your post again....

The half moon woodruff key that sits in the slot on the shaft...
if the woodruff key is badly worn You can a new one for a couple of dollars... if the groove is badly worn...
best to replace the genorator... or You could try Loctite steel putty in the worn groove with a new key...
it sets hard...

cheers

Lee

generator pulley

Thanks Lee and others, I had a closer look and the pulley came off without any dramas. I did have a spare generator but it is showing minor signs of wear so will try and source a new one from Micks in the morning. I also need some shims as the one in the photo is scattered over the engine like pixie dust.

The woodruff key and spline appear to have come through the ordeal unscathed.

Thanks again for the assistance.

Peter
