Bloody VW dealers : Rant
Visited my 4th VW dealer today, trying to find a good one.
I rang around on the weekend and asked 5 dealers if they had a manual TSI Polo. Only 1 had one on the lot. It's an hour 20 away so I arranged to call
back later in the week. I rang today. Yes they still have it, its out on a test drive but will make sure its on the lot at 2:15 when I get there. So I
turn up, the car is out doing a pizza run. Not happy. Eventually the pizzas arrive and I get the keys. Walk outside, hop in and its a DSG. What the
hell? Sales person says I thought this was what you wanted. Ummm no. Manual as in clutch pedal. There were 3 diesel manuals if I wanted one. So I
went all this way I thought I'd give it a go. I'm sure the manual box is fine, just let me feel how 77kW feels. Yeah nice car. Salesperson knew
absolutely nothing. I didnt think they were standard seats or wheels but was assured they were for the comfortline. But of course when you read the
brochure they are not. And it just went on and on. I spoke about the steering wheel paddle for the dsg in the gti and the salesperson thought that was
a manual. big sigh.
I dont understand how a person who reads the online brochure can know more about the cars than a person who goes away on training courses and sells
(try to) every day. This happened to me when I was Golf shopping and now Polo.
They wont tell me a real price unless I am willing to sign for the car. They dont want to do the haggling then I take the quote to another dealer and
they undercut and get the sale without doing any of the hard yards. So basically Volkswagen want me to buy a car that they cant provide me a test
drive of, without providing me with the real price, without being able to show me what ocean blue looks like in the flesh. They expect me to sign up
based on the chip in the brochure. And if I do sign up for a "cheaper than $25000", mystery car of mystery colour, then I have to wait 6-8months for
delivery.
But I can have an amorok in a manual because they are manual only. Ummmm Amorok is that big ute thing over there. I'm kind of after a small fuel
efficient commuter... like that hatch over there but one where the driver controls the gears. Thanks. Bye.

That's a shame. Have you driven a Cruze yet? You might be surprised. I reckon they're an impressive car for the money. For Polo money or less you
get a bigger car with a 103kW 1.4 litre turbo petrol or a 120kW 2.0 litre turbo diesel both with 6-speed manual. Not to mention that you're
supporting Australian jobs. At the very least I'm willing to bet that a Holden dealer will let you test drive one and see all the colours! You can
get them in the metallic blue and green colours from the Commodore range, which I like. And you shouldn't have to wait 6 months either, unless the
sales are going really crazy. I work at the factory and get to see them going down the line. For my money I'd probably go for an SRi manual in Red
Hot. Although if they offered the diesel in SRi trim with the watts link rear end then I would go diesel as it's quicker!

wouldn't be so sure about the so called 'aussie' Holden Cruze, I had an 07 Astra that blew a head gasket under warranty and have had another friend
have the computer completely give up the ghost, so I can only suspect the same about non-commodore models derived from the GM range.
The worst part with dealing with holden is the after sales service IMHO, im not sure if this is the case when you own a commodore, but owning a euro
model holden was/is just as expensive as owning my new VW.
my 2 cents

I just can't handle how expensive the Polo is for what you get. I can respect the Golf as reasonably good value, especially the fast ones, and the
Passat and Skoda ranges are even better value. The Polo is so overpriced though!

It really comes down to what you percieve as value on a car; if it is with electrics and interior bits and colours then VW could never compete, but I
think on the engineering stakes VW would almost always come out on top

Don't be so sure of that. I can't compare the driving experiences without driving every new car on the market, but in terms of on-paper
specifications the market is rapidly catching up. The aforementioned Cruze 1.4 litre offers direct injection and a turbo and makes more power than the
similar 90TSI. Many of the small car manufacturers, including Ford, Hyundai and even Chinese brands like Geely are adding a DSG-style twin clutch
paddle shift gearbox to their range within the next year to 18 months. Many manufacturers also now offer pretty respectable small turbo-diesels.

Nearly two years ago My Wife and I wanted a new car and She didn't want another Lancer... [We have had two CE 1.8 Lancers]
She wanted to sit up high, an Auto, and I wanted good fuel economy...
No one really wanted to show Us anything...
even while We were looking at New cars the salesmen didn't want to know Us...
I don't know what We would have bought Had a salesman or woman had come out and answered some questions...
although the salesman I did talk to before We were looking for a car didn't know anything about the car He was trying to sell..
He claimed He had been a Toyota saleman and had just started to sell ?? Mitsubishis.. ??
We never got to see a Polo... but saw a Suzuki Swift that a visitor to Scone had.. We both liked it... never drove it..
but We decided on a swift.. and its going great...
I think the New Cruze is an excellent car... Good to see they are finally making them in Australia...
after hearing what European car parts and service cost I don't think Our next car will be European either...
Sorry VW....
Lee
PS: did anyone know that the Great Wall utes have leather seats?? I read that most Chinese cars do..??

Never even sat in a Cruze. I like the look of them. They would be more of a golf competitor than a polo. I think Polo would be cheaper albeit in a
smaller car. I have one more day of leave, maybe I might go tyre kicking tomorrow. Just for fun though, I have to get a road going VW in my garage.
Maybe I should put in an order for 20 polos now and flog them all off in 6 months time. How much premium would people pay for no waiting?
There's an ex demo in port macquarie....

I had a polo for 2 months very chuckable car not bad for city driving parking etc
But felt very plasticky feels light on the road. Wouldnt my first choice.
In the looks depatment id go cruze over polo any day. Dsg box is crap. Im a driver not a rider. Manual thanks with a clutch pedal.
But if you want go with tonnes of reliabilty get a corrola sportivo. Toyota and honda are the most reliable cars around.
Good luck with your car hunting and hope you score a bargain

The VW dealer that supplied our 1971 Beetle must have been ok. I know that was then, this is now, but it is our only daily driver.
