That's it, I'm moving to Lithuania
Hard to believe but yet another very early and rare bug has turned up in Lithuania in a similar scenario to VW38 a few years earlier.
For those not familar with the the VW38 story, for years this chronically molested bug sat in someones backyard being ignored probably cos people
figured it was nothing special, just a severely hacked beetle.

The body, had the front mutilated with a DKW front end, fitted with a different windscreen, back window and the vw floorpan was swapped for a front
engined RWD Volga chassis.
Long story short the 3 prototype beetles from 1938 were destroyed before the war, this was one of the next batch of pre-production ones made.
Thankfully it's been restored now.

The latest find is an early 40s wartime KDF wagen.
Seems to be sitting on a Kubel chassis so is probably a type82e.
This ones discovery??
On the roof of a small town mechanics garage where it's been sitting for years

A photo from 11 years ago

Thankfully it's been swapped for a 70s bug and pulled down to be saved.

Just blows me away there is stuff like this still out there.

Nah, few bits aren't original, seems the engine is probably from a schwimmwagen
In a past life it would have looked like this

Wow, that's impressively complete, especially given what it was being used for! I've seen much worse cars come out of 'barn finds'.

The door handles and latch mechanisms belonged to the Volga that the chassis came from but the body itself really is a 1938 model.
Someone twigged what it really was when they noticed the square corners on the decklid and front bonnet.
Also the triangular number plate pressing was a pre KDF late 30s prototype beetle thing

Hi Steve, that was me.
I’m the one who wrote the stories on The Samba about the VW38 and recently about the ’43 KDF find in Lithuania. I’m originally from Latvia
(bordering with Lithuania) and now living in Sydney.
The ’38 was found and rescued by my friends in Lithuania. I merely wrote about this sensational find, so my role in the find was one of a reporter.
I did have the privilege to see and climb all over it when it was still in the back yard in Lithuania – what a weird feeling to be up-close and
personal with the second oldest beetle in the world!
The story on the ’43 KDF came out recently although the car was known for over 10 years.
See you at the Nationals

How about that.
I learned a looooooong time ago it's a very small world in VW circles.
Love your threads Undis.
