The Ol' New Pan vs Old Pan Question
Hey guys,
I know this has been brought up a few times, so I'm sorry for clogging the forums with crap, but I couldn't filter a search to find exactly what I
was after.
Basically, I was curious as to how difficult it is to place an older body onto a new IRS pan - hypothetically speaking, an Oval body on a late model
pan?
I understand that there is some cutting to do along the rear of the oval, the rear wheel arch or something?
Is it an easy(ish) job removing the body from the pan in the first place?
Also, the real reason I ask - is it worth it? Has anyone taken the plunge and do they regret/relish in their decision?

My Baja is on a '72 super pan with a Link-pin framehead welded on. The rear mounts are the same as the later model ball joint pan's. Basically you
need to cut the rear mounting plates off the body and weld them back on higher up. You may also need to knock the inner guards in a touch, which I had
to do. aside from that it should be a pretty straightforward procedure.
The benefits are good, with the super pan I got factory IRS pivots boxes so I can convert when I get around to it with little hassle. The gearstick is
mounted further back in the pan so it's easier to reach. From a handling a serviceability point of view the factory balljoint is better than the
factory link pin.
About halfway down the page I cut the body mounts off and tacked them back on. Make sure you allow for the thickness of the rubber and it's
squish.
