Which one?

Ive been looking for a beetle for a few months now and the only reason i haven't bought one is im not sure, standard or super???
I know some of the differences.
Super
Macpherson struts
good turning
Apparently has an uglier shape???(haven't seen both side by side i just logged into this site for the first time in months and noticed that the nationals are on so im gonna go to that to see the difference)
Cheaper + i already have some parts off a 72 super
standard
torsion beam
bouncey?
More expensive

Heres what i want out of my Beetle acceleration and turning ability, im not really interested in top speed since if i race there will be lots of turns (straight runs don't seem like a challange).
Based on what i just said i am guessing everyone is going to say go for a 1600 dual port super but i want to hear if anyone will say otherwise.
Are there advantages of having a standard around turns?
is the shape of the super uglier then the standard?
Also further down the track i may possibly do a chop top as well as put in a turbo engine.(dont factor in the engine doubt ill want to spend the money hahaha)

Go the Super! Macpherson struts in the front and IRS in the back gives superior handling.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I dont think the looks are any less appealing. Just a little different.
Supers are ultimately going to be the rarer car in the future so grab one now while they are cheap!

I just got back from the nationals and im still in a conundrum, so many nice standard ovals (the oval just blends so nicely) tbh i think most of the ones i liked were standard ovals :-/

Agreed.
Its mainly the standard Beetle purists clutching at straws trying to find a reason not to like them.

To 99% of the public and even alot of VW enthusists they both just look like Beetles, the shape and overall layout is the same and most don't even spot the difference between a standard and superbug without studying the 2 closely parked side by side.

For a race car with corners the Super is the way to go! I used to have a 1500, now have an S-Bug. The Superbug undoubtedly handles better. Looks don't really matter for a race car, although I think mine looks alright. I do slightly prefer the look of a standard bug though.

From the rear the '68-onwards standard and the S-Bug look exactly the same. If you put earlier guards on it the L-bug can be converted to look the same as well.

look at the race people on here, most run supers / L bugs or "76" spec beam, balljoint beam irs rear, super as far as im aware is ever so slightly heavier, each to their own, my advice, drive a good & bad example of each & go from there, suss out the hillclimb crowd & the circuit people from the sprints that we just had :)
