Engine Power question

Ladies and gents,

a question for you all. My squareback is losing power badly in 4th when I go up hills. On flats it goes well and keeps up with 110kmph traffic if required. If I drop back to 3rd I can accelerate again but am limited by the gearbox etc as to top speed.
I know its out of tune (dual carbies) and backfires if I take my foot off the accelerator quickly, but am curious if its a sign that something else may be wrong.
Its booked in for a service / tuneup next week, but am trying to work out whats wrong as well.
Cheers

Sign of a loss of torque somewhere, i can see a tuneup being the most simple solution.

Have the service and carbies balanced then you can fit the towbar on that I am offering you. Check pm and let me know. Cheers Les

Get your service done and I reckon it would be worth checking your compression. Also check that all of your head bolts are tight, I've heard that these can sometimes work loose and cause problems like you describe.

P@@@ off you lucky bugger.
Its damn cold down here and looks like I'll be here for the foreseeable future.
I wear short sleeves to work, but have a heated building to work in.

I've got the only Type 3 at Staff College as well :P

probably just the points closed up with wear. And maybe its running a little lean with all that dense cold air you got down there. But at least it wont be raining every second day like melbourne ;)

Okies,

got it back and what a difference!!
Carbies were out of tune (one by a fair whack), points werre closed, timing off by about 15 degrees and a few other things. Now runs sweetly (esxcept for rattling in the exhaust - but that goes away when it heats up).
Think we have now found a really good VW mechanic for Canberra to match our Sydney and Melbourne ones!

have you checked the vacuum can hose/s? (some years are dual action, most are single. Ie. 1 hose and 2 hose versions)

also check the vacuum advance mechanism works inside the dizzy by sucking the air out via the vac advance hoses mentioned above.

check mechanical advance is not sticking or is not to sloppy.

backfiring can also be faulty coil, leads, condenser, bad plugs, carbon tracked dizzy cap and/or rotor button.

various other problems with cabs can do this too but I'm no expert on cabs, EFI is my thing

I'm over at Weston Creek until next year. Then to Brindabella Park (I hope).

Ah, Brindabella Park, we are moving there sometime next year, I'll have to make sure my Type 3 (Rusty) is back on the road and looking nice for the new car park. It's just run out of tassie Reg, so I'm thinking of sending him in for a over haul, inside and out.
