in australia there is not much difference between the two
in eaurope and north america the 67 was pretty much a 1 year only car sought of half way between our 67 and 68 cars with lots of little odd bits such as a 1 year only engine lid and rear apron ,wierd door handles, steering lock etc they also got the big window turret in 64

The chassis number tells the tale.

The format is 19y nnnnnn' for Australian-built Beetles from 1965-67. '1' means Type 1. '9' means Australia (US websites don't know abut this). And in your case, the next number '6' means that it's a '66. The following '7' means nothing, it's just part of the 'block' of numbers assigned to the Melbourne factory.

In 1966-67 VW Australia had a factory capable of producing 50,000 vehicles a year but never made any more 35,000 in any year (1964). After that sales slumped and unsold VWs clogged the distribution yards and dealers. I'm not surprised that a 1966-made Beetle was not sold until 9/67; it probably sat in the Lanock Motors distribution yard in Lidcome for at least 6 months.

Don't worry about US-spec '66 or '67 Beetles as they are irrelevant to this topic and only confuse the issue. Aussie '66 and '67 Beetles are pretty much identical except for different paint colours and trim - the '67s were more basic. Some '67s had a different ashtray cover with no knob.

To get a better idea of when yours was made, look for date stamps on each of the wheel centres, on the back of the speedo and under the front blinker chrome covers.
