blue slip regulations

Can anyone tell me what type of things mechanics look for in blue slips to make a kombi roadworthy.

Especially rust, are they only looking for structural rust, what about surface rust and/or bubbling etc.

What about the engines, pretty much every 3rd VW engine that I have seen drips oil, how hard do they go on that.

What about window seals, etc, and paint, does it matter if some of the panels are different colours.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi
It ALL depends on Your inspector - EXAMINER...
If He knows of VWs and Kombis... [Not many do!!!]
He can look over it with a fine tooth comb and find stupid things..

different painted panels mean nothing...
surface rust - bubbles.. its His call...
structural rust isn't good...
Window seals - its His call...

VW Engine.... spray it all over top and bottom with foaming degreaser... maybe a few times...
and hose it off...
Foaming degreaser can be found in cheap shops for under $5 a can... the FOAMING degreaser is the Best one...
it will show foam on the picture on the can..

I do My beetle after every long trip if its oily underneath...
and on top if its oily there too..

I keep the top clean all the time..

I hope this helps

LEE

PS: with the problems I had with My beetle for a green slip at a NON VW mechanic... I'll stay with VW mechanics/inspectors
next time

Lee

any visible rust will fail. about the only exception on that would be surface rust on bumper bars and hubcaps. any other sort of rust in the body, doors, around windows or battery tray etc will fail.

the rule on oil leaks it basicly if it drips on the ground during the time taken to do the inspection it will probably fail. as long as your rear main, rocker covers and pushrod tubes arent leaking, degrease and gerney the bottom of your engine just before you go for the inspection and it should be fine.

colour doesnt matter, the car could be half in primer and pass, window and door seals just have to be there doesnt matter if they're rock hard

other things they will look for is battery clamp fitted, no play in front end ie: ball joints, tie rod ends, centre pin bush, drag link, steering box, steering dampner. Cracked steering coupling, tyre condition, wheel bearing (no play and quiet) leaking cv boots, handbrake adjusted properly, no rips in seats. Horn works, wiper blades are soft, lights work, no cracks in light lenses, no cracks in windscreen. The heater is supposed to work to demist the windscreen on cold wet days but most if not all blue slip stations wont check that. Also if you have a bullbar a spare tyre bolted to the front will also fail because it is a protrusion from the vehicle.

hey klaus, we are looking for a camper, any year is good as long as its decent and hopefully doesnt need any rust work. Happy to have to work on the interiors eg carpets, lining, door cards, etc.
Would need a rock and roll bed in the back and preferrably some cubpoards/fridge etc.
After the camper so we can accomodate for us adults and two kids on the fold out bed in the pop top section. Anything come to mind.?

Also open to a camper poptop with no cupboards etc but with a full length seat (capable of seating three in the back) that then converts to a bed.

Am concerned now, did see a post earlier this evening on the kombi forum, someone is selling their camper because of nsw back seat day/night bed regulations for young children. Anyone know about that. We have a toddler who would need to ride in the back in a baby seat archored to the car. (have seen a couple of toodler/baby seats in kombis so didnt think anything of it.)

Have also seen a couple of kombis with a little dickie seat behind the pasasngers seat which faces the back of the bus, are they usuable whilst traveling for another child/passenger or are they just for sitting on when camping?

sorry about the questions, new to the kombi's/

Thanks

I always wondered about that. Never been failed for a blue or pink slip because of it, but the whole protrusion thing. That also applies to things like exhausts. If it sticks out it's no good. So the average set of thunderbirds on a beetle should be a fail.

Someone is selling approved folding bed / seat frames. Last I looked I think they run $800 odd. I know that will be a future investment for me.

Just trying to remember what I've had VWs knocked back on...

A broken screw on one of the deflector tins. I had to drill a tiny hole in the case next to it and put a screw in to get that through. Oil leaks, oil leaks oil leaks. Oil leaks.
Rusted battery tray. Rust around accelerator pedal. bad reflectors in headlights. Retractible seatbelts didn't lock (This is why inspections are a good thing. I had no idea they were broken). Warped brake rotors.

kombi specific: Rust on front step, rust under back seat where the rock'n'roll bed bolts on.

Personally, I've nearly hit my roadworthy goals. just having a &^%* of a time getting some parts. WHY CAN'T BRAKE PLACES MAKE %^$&* METRIC, BUBBLE FLARE BRAKE LINES?

Not Klaus, and this isn't where I saw it for sale recently but this is what Google showed me:

http://www.kustomkombi.com/adr-rr.php

For the life of me I can't remember where I saw it with a price. It may have even been in an Australian VW magazine.

the fold down bed seats arent legal to travel on. I did have one and used it as a passenger seat illegally. Maybe I got mine through because it was a commercial originally therefore only a three seater. Not sure how you would go if the camper started out as a microbus.

Another thing I had trouble with is retractable seatbelts. I got the brackets out of a 77 and bought new belts. However I got knocked back because compliance plate codes didnt have retractable apparently. Guy was a dick. I had to mount the belts on 1/4 inch thick angle, also bolting it through the partition wall, which I had to reinforce with 2mm plate. Which I used gal, apparently a bad thing, the zinc makes a weak weld, but he let me off. I could have picked the kombi up by the seatbelt mounts. C@ck
