towing a trailer with van on. illegal?

i need to bring a van down to Vic from Nelson bay and have read that towing a trailer, with the van on is illegal, doesn't make sense if it is.

Boats can come of their trailers and caravans can come loose.

anyone know the real truth?

thanks.

i think its a weight thing. the van plus trailer is quite heavy compaired to a caravan, provided the towing capacity of the tow vehicle exeeds the weight of the unit being towed (trailer + load) then you should be ok.
