Indicator switch - which one?


This is a doozy. Thought it was going to be easy working out which indicator switch assembly was right for the fasty (Australian assembled, 3/71, newer dashpad, flow-through dash vents, older instrumentation + steering wheel). Ripped it out, found part number was 411 953 515A. Obviously somebody raided the Type 4 bin for this one. Annoyingly, the switch wasn't wired for side-marker parking lights, either, even though all the wiring + bulbs are in the car. Can anybody tell me what the right part number is? Lack of parkers is pissing me off big-time.

cheers for that. Ended up going for the nearest thing available - a '71 Superbug switch, which comes with loose, bare wire ends - and saved my plastic loom rack off the one I had, because I didn't want to cut off the nine-pin plug - wanted to keep the stock look. This involved Dremelling bits of plastic off the new switch at the bottom, drilling new holes at the bottom to take the retaining pins of the old loom rack and individually snipping off and resoldering the old pins to the new wires. If anybody ends up having to do the same, and they want to keep side parking light functionality, note that the '71SB switch has the parking light contacts jump-wired together, which means only eight wires out instead of nine and is no good for Type 3s. I snipped the little jumper wire off the bottom terminal, wrapped it back around the top of the switch and soldered a new, longer length of wire to it to take it back down the loom rack to the pins and give me individual left and right side parking lights. Apart from the hand soldering at the pins, I'd challenge anyone to pick it from the original.
Also ended up chucking in a new brake master cylinder and a new fuel tank connector hose I noticed leaking while breaking my fingers on the brake job. There wouldn't have been too many dirtier, angrier blokes than me going around on Monday night. VWs are about fun, right? Right??

Mate, I've been doing stuff to air-cooled VWs from the age of 15, but what changes is your recovery time. I'm 42 now and am still feeling the after-effects from that brake job. I think I did a shoulder working in closely confined spaces on my back in the rain with crap falling in my face every ten seconds. There's stuff I really like doing, like electrics and engine rebuilds where the engine is out. And there are filthy jobs I bloody hate, like brakes and CV joints. Baby just needs to behave herself for a few weeks and the love will return as it always has. Bitching over....
