Endplay setting question


Hi All
Setting the endplay on my new motor and found it was only 0.019".Shims I've got are only 0.009", so what's the go, machine flywheel or something else?
Motor has a 8 dowel CW crank, bolt in sand seal and lightened flywheel. All new parts. Also #1 main bearing is seated and snug in the case.

.019"....? is that without any shims?

You must use three shims IMO

They are available new in limited sizes

You need to set your endfloat to .0028-.005" (off the top of my head)
Some people set it to more, they like it loose to promote oil flow, but IMO this can be a problem as when you have your foot on the clutch, there is pressure on one side of the bearing, with a larger endfloat clearance, oil will favour the loose side and the loaded side can starve of oil and get damaged or even sieze.

Sorry,0.019" without any shims. I'm aiming for 0.003"-0.004" so I'm thinking I might have to machine flywheel down a touch so I can use 3 shims.........

The shims come in various sizes to allow the correct end float to be achieved without machining components.

Unless the components are dimensionally incorrect. I'd check your parts thoroughly before machining anything. It is definately not normal to need to machine the flywheel OR the crank.

i know about the 3 shims but why 3?
say if you can get 2 that are just right or 3 that are almost right
you nutters must know why :)
or is it just follow the vw spec's

2 shims does not work,the design is 3 shims and after 60 odd years it is still right. The shims are available in different sizes for this reason.VW spent a lot of time and money to design these engines and it shows in that they are still around.In over 40 years I have not seen any one successfully use less even though they may say they did.

Fit the metal gasket to the end of the crank. This will give an extra 0.1-0.15mm spacing.

Thinnest shim is 0.2mm I think. If still not enough float then machine the F/wheel. Easier than trying the bearing, case apart etc :)

In a 3 pack shim kit the center is a type of slip shim, thats why 3 are always used

The pack of three slows the surface speed, so the one against the bearing is turning much slower, therefore less bearing wear.......well that's how I imagened it. :)
