we haven't weighed all of the removed metal as yet Craig , but Ben and Chris tried to weigh Bens old supercharger with manifolds and NO carburettor ..... my digital scales only went to 30kg , we estimate that it weighs a whopping 35kgs . There will be a heap of weight saving with a new blower and alloy intake manifold system alone .....

with the assistance from Chris Bolton , Lincoln Jackson and myself , Ben gets a start on his new chromoly cage

strengthening feet are manufactured for the cage legs and welded into place . additional plates will be welded to these and attached to the floorpan assembly .

The main hoop and front legs are formed from chromoly tube and fitted in place to be tach welded

Ben has made more progress on his bug , however judging by the following pics it actually looks like he has gone backwards , but the bug has to be disassembled for cage welding prior to reassembly . Had the ANDRA tech inspector at WPVW to take a look at the progress on Bens bug and he is happy with what he see's so far .
We manufacture a nice strong seat mount for Ben and weld it into place

the body is cut and removed for ease of cage manufacture and welding of all the upper pipes . The body only had to be in place for the main hoop and front legs to be manufactured , all other bars wont require the body to be fitted at this stage

Great work guys, coming a long very nice!!

Funny, I'm at the same stage with the type 3.
Looks like you are enjoying the bar work as much as me, it all comes together so fast.

Good idea chopping the a pillar and rear sill to remove the body to allow easy welding,
Better than slipping the hoop through the floor to weld and then trying to get around the body to do the rear stays can be tricky.

Keep it up!!!

Mr Andra man didn't mind main cage going to body sills (sill can collaps or bend) not the chassis of car , plus if body comes loose or falls off cage strength is compromised .
I hope the rest is tied into chassis ( front and rear of car and side legs to tunnnel )

What was the bottom rear wards band in main loop for ? you will have to strengthen that area .

I think seat should be tied into chassis and roll cage not sill as it will bend or collapse , then you move then seat belts come loose ( put across bar from front and rear main loop then seat mounts to it )

These are things I found when doing my cage ( yes every tech person has there own ideas )but I was told a beetle should be
thought of as a full chassis car as body can come off in a accident ( race cars are cut up, most don't have standed number of bolts or standed strength any more )

The sills and floor are very thin tin , so can be punched or collapse through in a big hit , thats why you should think of car as a full chassis style car .
Sorry for sounding negative :( (but a person rides along in side and cars are becoming lite weight and much faster .)
Cheers Peter P

Pee, i think i remember the cage that brad did for the vwma rat( ben's car) has the bar work running around the inside edge of the sill's and the hoops attach to that and not the sill itself....Good point.

yes you hit the nail on the head with that comment Ben ..... Bens cage is an exact replica of Chris Boltons cage and the same people made the same remarks when his cage was being built also ..... Chris' cage has turned out awesome and the tech inspector was really happy with it as the strongest point along the side of the beetle chassis is the heater tunnel area , and when you tie the cage mounting feet with additional plates into the floorpan as we have done with Chris' mountings (and will do the same with Bens') , this is a far stronger method than fixing straight to the pan with a plate as it can easily punch through on a high impact situation .
Ben is going to run really quick and I want the car safe for him .

Exactly... The WPVW team know what they're up to

Good stuff again!

I personally would like to see the windows score a black edging while they're out to cover the green mounting tabs..... They always looked a bit funky compared to the standard of the rest of the car. My 2cents worth right there!

I agree with you about the windows ..... Ben did say to me already that he was going to paint the black strip around the windows .....
We did have an official at WSID ask us to do that as he was working at the start line area and every time Ben came out to race it looked like the front screen was missing

nah troy it is my car that has the bar along the floor.vw floors and seals are shit.so i thought i would have a crack at making it better.
it is funny how different people do things and swear that they know what they are doin.we all have our reasons.
usually when you look back at what you were doing 5 or so years ago.you realize .
i haven't seen a cage that andra didn't tech.as long as the welds are good and there is a plate on the floor,it will pass.
your only as good as your last job and you can only hope to get better every time.

That is a great choice,
and plenty big enough to get you into the nines!

Perhaps even better if you can get it as light as Chris' car!

Would love to see more progress pictures of the cage.
I liked how well Chris' came out,
so it will be good to know that you will be safe with all that power!

after all the cutting and grinding of the body , Ben gives it a good clean to ensure that the grit doesnt leave rust stains on the paint .

and as Ben mentioned , we ordered another lot of chromoly tube in for his cage and it arrived yesterday . Last night Ben made a few more bars for his cage and I cut them on the milling machine so that the joins would be a true fit .
