Nice updates Ben and Wayne.
New set up should have pick-up!
You will be amazed how much fuel a blown car can handle.
Mine was using metanol at about 18lt/min at 7000 rpm, which was about 9lt per run.
This was with the blowers supplying about 4.55 lt of air per revolution.
This information may help when you choose a fuel supply system.

Nice progress Ben. Looks like a full set of albins gears, but no super diff or spool?
Are you running the same engine combo this year?

Just a few more late nights to go.... Keep up the good work Ben :tu::tu:

It is something that came up at Kwinana last year.... One of the tech guys at the track was talking to another racer about it.... It could will be untrue, but worth finding out for sure I reckon....
Maybe some of the more tech savvy/aware racers here will be able to clear it up?

I was going to keep my mouth shut about this
because I would prefer to make only positive contributions, but...

Welded diffs are not legal for andra sanctioned events. (it IS in the rule book)

It is ones personal choice whether they lie about it or not,
as is your safety, which is the reason they are disalowed.

Correctly made spools are not expensive when compared with other race car parts,
and can be purchased either here, or in the USA.

They are also a good way to eliminate the weak cast IRS iron factory carrier
that I have broken before when I used to run super diffs.

Locally, Dave Stoker has made some, and I am also sure that Albins makes a solid shaft
that will run through the stock carrier, or one of their own billet steel superdiffs.

Cant seem to find the rule I spoke of in the current rule book.
Perhaps it was a repressed memory from an older time!
Anyone concerned should perhaps ring ANDRA's tech line.

If it were me, I would, as a minimum, get a steel hemisphere cover to replace the factory cast one.

Make sure the welding and housing is regularly mag particle crack tested.

I think it's under the General Safety Regulations for SS/SST in the rear of the book (at work so can't check ATM) Dave.

A throwback to the "good-old-days" when every second Chevyshit with C-clip axles would throw a 28x10.50x15 and Centreline in a graceful loop over the heads of the startline crew coz the welded diff strained the axles........

Having said that, I'm with Dave. Personally I wouldn't be comfortable with it, coz I've had to catch a car that speared into the wall at 100MPH when an axle broke, and that was with a spool, which gives a fair bit more leeway.
But hey, race and have fun man, each to their own I guess.

please explain how a solid spool has a bit more leeway than a welded diff when you break an axle . We are on a public forum here where others read and learn from our advise . Thanks , Wayne

I meant a mini-spool on a 9" diff Wayne, sorry for any confusion there! Turning into the pit bay you can hear the centre ratcheting and going clunk-clunk-clunk as you turn in a bit, whereas with a solid diff the tyres just chirp and squeal coz it's all locked.
As you know, with a solid centre of any kind, when you break an axle the problem isn't so much losing drive to one side of the car and getting driven sideways under power, it's more of a shock when you lift off the throttle (uhmmm, as you do when something goes BANG! :(), and the car now spears in the opposite direction just as quick. The only way to keep them fairly straight is to try to hold a steady throttle foot and get on the brakes smoothly to pull them up. The difference between a welded centre and a machined solid centre is also the metallurgical properties changing on the welded steel, something Dangerous referred to.
Hopefully others on this public forum can now understand why I personally don't like them much.........then again, I always was a bit of a scaredy-cat.

I didn't mean to jump on anyone's party here, I used to run a welded Banjo diff in a 308 Torana for a while, and most people know how strong those things are.........NOT!!! At least with the VW your wheel and axle aren't gonna fly off into orbit. Apart from the handling issues there aren't any safety dramas with a VW, but then again I'm not an ANDRA tech guy, so it's not my decision to make. You guys do what you feel comfortable with, and have a good race. :tu:

that still does not make any sence????? A spool locks the centre, so the inside wheel is always going to "chirp".mine always does!!! It makes no difference to an axle wether the center is welded or a spool if there is enough power its going to break regardles.

I said mini-spool.
I don't have to say "do what you feel comfortable with" again........
*sigh*
I'm bored with it all, wish I'd never said anything.

By the way Ben, I love your car man. Blown Bug's have a soft spot in my heart, and yours is a really nice one, I'd love to hear the thing make a pass.
Enjoy. :tu:

well we ran into a small issue with Bens' engine ..... when washing all parts for reassembly we discovered that the gudgeon pin on No.3 cylinder was bent and had flogged the piston . There is approx .003" ovality in the piston boss which allows the pin to float excessively . This is on the cylinder where the rod came loose .
After a quick ring around to some reputable VW drag racers , no AA or Wiseco pistons could be located in 94mm . So Ben has ordered a set of 94mm JE race pistons from US and are expected to arrive tomorrow .
Meanwhile I have continued with fabricating manifolds for the blower and Ben has concentrated on the body / interior .
The window net , parachute , new blower pulleys and other items have arrived for Bens' bug and he has also lashed out and ordered a RLR rev-6 dual disc clutch assembly , which will arrive in a couple of days .
