Starter or Engine
well my engine will not turn over well with the starter.
the engine will turn over with the spanner on the crank shaft easily enough. good compression too.
but to no avail the starter will not have enough grunt to turn it.
result is a slight turn a click or nothing at all.
anyone!
we have changed starters and the wiring is good.
do you think maybe both starters are shot.
going nuts here

Hi Paul
to check whether the starter solenoid is NOT working
with the car in neutral and the RH rear jacked up
place a large screwdriver across the terminals of the Solenoid on the starter motor...
One will have a large cable going to it...
there are two large nuts and threads...
place the screwdriver across those..
and if the solenoid isn't working BUT the starter motor is OK
it will turn over...
there will be SPARKS... lol
the other common problem with cars over 40 years old...
the contacts in the starter switches are dirty or contaminated and don't let enough power to throw the solenoid in
which then turns on the starter motor...
I would guess first off..
the ignition switch...
there is a small wire coming off the solenoid....
replace it with another wire and push one end thru the hole in the floor into the battery compartment,
and the other end onto the terminal where the small wire went..
then touch the other end of that wire onto the + positive side of the battery..
and if the solenoid is OK then the starter will turn once the solenoid clicks in....
I hope you can understand all that...

what autobug said.
I went through starting my car screw driver for about 2 months becuase I was to lazy to get a new solenoid.
Also put a new switch in which helped.
Check with the screw driver, then work your way back up the system.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!
Go hard or go home!!!!

Please don't put the screwdriver across the main terminals as it will blow a chunk out of the screwdriver,use the other method involving the positive
cable and the solenoid cable,this will tell you if the solenoid is working and also the starter.Check the solenoid wire under the rear seat as
sometimes this will work its way apart or have a bad connection.If none of this works put a test light on the solenoid wire at the starter and operate
the starter,if the light doesn't light it should be the ignition switch contacts.

What happened to that screwdriver????

My 68 Beetle is a semi auto that Can;t be started when in Gear
When I first got it on the road..
I had to jack it up at a servo and use the screwdriver to start it
then at a Car show... lol..
[ waited until nearly everyone was gone.. lol ]
and parked on the road a few times and again ..
VW Jack and the big screwdriver
this was starting the engine... in gear... Hand Brake on....
and up on a VW jack.... lol
Not good on soft tar or grass.... lol
and I saw a Large screwdriver today with the end unusable...
I now think I remember what happened to it....

I had the same problem with my '63 Beetle, which is still 6 volt and therefore prone to hard start problems.
I reconditioned two different starters and both of them acted the same way (I recoed the second one when the first didn't work, figuring that there
was a problem with the windings in the first one...)
I then replaced the starter bush in the bell housing/gearbox - starts better than ever.
Try this next - the bushes are cheap, and not all that difficult to replace - even with then engine in the car.

Yeah - I had the bushing this as well
I solved it by putting a "hi torque" starter in.
They dont need tohe bushing
(sounds great as well )

the Hi-torque starters do sound great and do an awesome job of starting higher compression engines...but compared to the cost of a replacement
bush....

was the bush, i tried a semi auto starter in lieu of the standard and vroom,
2332cc on her way. f*&k engine is loud, exhaust reverberating off the gound with 48 ida's.
ran the cam in, then back in the shed for some underbody work and refinement .
advancing the fk10 livened the engine up. ye ha.
