After advise on this Fastback for sale
Hi all,
I am new on this forum and considering buying a Fastback. I have looked at several cars and I have attached a photo of a 1970 that I looked at today.
It is in quite good condition, there is little rust, just a few spots that can be repaired without having to repaint the car. Mainly left front floor
pan (minor) and left door pillar. Interior needs some work, but nothing too drastic. The car drives well, steering feels tight and gearbox might need
work over time. I took a fridge magnet and don't think there is a lot of bog under the paintwork.
Anyone here know this car? Asking price is $7,500.
I know this is a fair bit, but I'm not keen on repainting a car at the moment, so that limits my choices somewhat. Mechanical work is no issue for
me.
Would greatly appreciate feedback.

Well it certainly looks good.
I had my gearbox checked over with a few replacement bits and this cost $600, just so you know what things could cost.
Getting a car restored takes a considerable amount of time not only in the finish but also the details and part sourcing if needed so if this is all
taken care of then the $7500 is probably worth it for someone who does not wish to do the work.
If you can post some more pics of it inside and out then those of us that are familiar with the cars can spot what is original or not. So far it looks
good.
For that money I would want to be sure that it runs well and is original as far as parts and bodywork. If the car has been modified from original
(hacked) then this affects the value considerably for me. A bigger aircooled engine is ok, parts from other model type 3s is ok but air scoops, wings
or other nasties is just wrong for air cooled goodness.
Maybe you could get an aircooled workshop to check it out and at least check the compression. If the engine needs work then you may have a bargaining
chip to get it a bit cheaper?

7500 sounds very high ( in my opinion ). I'd say for that coin it should be 100% compleat, no need to any work.

so, its been repainted
ask for any info about it...
whether any mechanical repairs and whether the engine has been over hauled and serviced all the time..
Is it fuel injected?
or twin carburetors..
check if its been greased in the front end..

Thanx guys for the quick replies.
The respray was a bare metal and looks like it was quite well done. The front and rear guards seem to have been replaced with new ones when the
respray was done 4-5 years ago.
The front end was 'rebuild' but don't have much info about it. The steering felt quite firm compared to others I have driven that were a bit sloppy
and wandering. The engine is original, about 120K on it and is twin carb. Doesn't smoke and going reasonably well. The interior has been done at some
stage, but isn't original. The dash has cracks in it and the steering wheel isn't original. Everything seems there though. The rear windscreen
rubber is new, front one is old and cracked. Door rubbers are old but in reasonable condition. The doors close well, very solid feel to them. No play
in the hinges either.
I have a mechanical background and can do most work on a car, but I just don't feel like doing lots of panelwork. The car will come with a
roadworthy, but that doesn't always mean a lot.
I don't have any photos of the interior.

Looks realy good, love the colour, but why would anyone do a bare metal respray and then reuse the old cracked windscreen rubber? but then I'm a long
way from being an expert in these things.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!
