Gutting a vw generator

Hi,

I am trying to gut my vw generator and run a total loss electrical system (race car) I want to have the main generator shaft spinnig freely on its own only running in the two bearings. I have got the thing apart, but cannot work out how to remove the commutator(?) Or, the big lump in the middle attached to the shaft. It doesnt look like the bearings on either end will come off (wierdly) to allow the commutator to slide off.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards, Grant

The bearings can be driven off with a punch or removed with a bearing splitter and press, remembering to be careful.
