Newbie from Wodonga

Hello all,

Thought I'd better post in here... My name is Alastair and I'm a mechanic currently living in Wodonga while I complete a Cert. III of Motorsport

My girlfriend Kate bought a '71 Super-bug for her first car a couple years ago now and I've been entrusted with the task of restoring the mechanicals while she is looking into the interior side. The little body work that needs to be done (mainly just new seals and paint) will be a combination of me doing what I can and outsourcing the rest.

We've been slowly fixing things as we go such as replacing the steering box that had a lot of slop and a really good service and tune. We've also sourced and replaced a bunch of interior parts and fixed a few electrical gremlins along the way.

The motor however has seen better days and a small issue with it losing all power under load has led to the decision to source another core motor and rebuild the mechanicals. I can tell you now that a lot of forum trawling is in my near future!

I've always been a small Ford man having owned several Escorts and a Cortina but I've always loved the air-cooled VWs so I'm looking forward to getting stuck in.

The car is going to be built with reliability and economy as primaries (she not particuarly interested in going fast, lying low or being loud despite my efforts) with a few subtle mods to aid in this.

I'll try to find some photos of the car to post up soon but will definitely be starting a build thread when the real work starts.

I'm sure you'll see me lurking around and get sick of my questions soon enough though!

Hopefully we may even be able to come out to a meet sometime in the future as well.

I look forward to talking to and picking the brains of all of you.

Thanks for the welcome guys!

cam070: I've seen a few nice looking air-cooled VWs around the Albury/Wodonga area... Regional areas are great keepers of classic cars ;)

h: Photos will be coming soon... Rob (the beetle) and my gf are still in Adelaide so I'll get some next time I am visiting :)
