SOLD

Hello everyone,

Up for sale is my completely restored 71 Lowlight Kombi.

THE KOMBI.
Well, what can I say...? IT’S AWESOME!!! This my pride and joy. I NEVER restored this Kombi with the thought of selling him. I went to all ends to make this the Kombi I always wanted. (My wife might argue I went a little TOO far, ha ha). I wanted this bus to look like it came straight off of the showroom floor in 1971. I even went as far as ensuring all the glass I purchased for the windows were original VW windows, so that all my windows had the little VW emblem etched into them. Crazy, I know, but that’s what I wanted. The only reason for the sale is to start on the 66 Panel. Anyway, here are the details...

• Full bare-metal restoration - with 5 coats of 2-pac. The bus took quite some time to build, but I FINALLY got it on the road late 2009. ALL rust removed and replaced with panels purchased from thebusstop.com. The passenger side door is a completely new door. Front inner and outer was removed and replaced with new panels. There is way too much info to go into here, but in short, all is good on the rust front – there is none!!!

• Mechanically – is running an original reconditioned 1600 that has done about 30,000 miles. It was purchased from Roger at Southside VW, who actually had it in his vehicle. It was re-conditioned by him and is regularly serviced and maintained by him. It just had its most recent major service in Dec 2010. I just took my family to Sydney recently to show off our lovely Kombi to my parents. I can honestly say he ran like a dream with not a single issue. He was an absolute pleasure to drive.

• Transmission – an original 1600 box that was also completely rebuilt and reconditioned by Southside VW approx 5-6 months ago.

• Seats, door-cards, kickers and inside panels – The Kombi seats 8 people, all original Kombi van seats that were professionally upholstered by a fantastic bloke down on the Gold Coast, (It’s the same guy Glenn used for his bus. I forget the company name, but I will find it). I had it done in basket weave vinyl to give it a retro/original look, but in the way that I liked it. I can honestly say that these seats look FANTASTIC!!!

• Headliner – Professionally made and installed by Prestige Auto Trimming Slacks Creek. I had it done in the perforated vinyl to replicate the original look.

• Soundproofing with Dynamat

• Electrics – Electrics, lights, etc were done by Doug Ritchie Auto Electrician, Slacks Creek. (He did show me how to hook some stuff up to save some money in the restoration process, so I did a small amount of this)

• Baby Seat Bolt – I had a baby seat restraining hook legally installed in the boot of the Kombi by James at KustomKombi and had the Kombi mod plated to accommodate this.

• New Parts – I tried to replace old for new on most things. The items that were fitted to my Bus were all purchased from thebusstop.com.au and Micks Motors:
o ALL seals and rubbers for EVERY door and window
o Complete set of new Hella headlights, front indicators and rear tail lights.
o New front VW badge
o New antenna
o New vent mesh
o New bumper step rubbers
o New chrome German side mirrors
o New rear vision mirror
o New chrome rear engine pan
o New steering Wheel
o New glove box lid
o New sliding windows both passenger and drivers side
o New aluminium trims and inside scrapers for both front windows.
o New number plate light
o New interior lights
o New sun visors
o New Hinge covers for rear boot
o New seatbelts

• POINTS OF INTEREST:
o I managed to keep all of the locks from the Kombi prior to the resto, as they were in great condition, so one key opens both of the front doors, side door and boot. The ignition barrel and wiring was all replaced with new items purchased from thebusstop.com.au, so a separate key is needed to start the Kombi, so all up, the Kombi has two keys.
o Parts that I scrounged around for on Ebay and/or swap meets or came with the bus originally are – original plastic tyre cover for spare wheel in the boot with no cracks, the glass windows as I have explained about earlier, proper radio blank, original Kombi jack, and a set of decent hubcaps and rims.
o The sliding door works very well and the locking mechanism is perfect, locking both inside and outside of the vehicle.
o After market wiper and horn have been installed as the originals were not that reliable, but are hidden out of view as to not affect the original Kombi aesthetics.
o I have recently installed a CD player, (in the glove box so it can not be seen) and 4 speakers, but I would prefer not to sell these with the kombi as they were all a gift to me from my mother-in-law for Christmas. They can all be VERY easily removed from the Kombi, leaving no trace that there was ever a CD player installed.

• BAD POINTS – With a need to be COMPLETELY honest with these sales, I do wish to tell EVERYTHING about my beloved Kombi...
o Fuel gauge doesn’t work. I have been told by the auto-electrician that the fuel sender is broken, which is approx $130 from thebusstop.com.au. But the engine has to be removed, and quite possibly the tank. I am not quite sure, but this task was simply on the to-do list. I simply fill him up every 250 miles.
o Speedo is a little off, but still works just fine. I just had to get it tested for the speeds I was travelling at, and what it actually showed on the dial.
o The paint, there are small pin holes in the paint in 2 or 3 small areas. Everyone I have shown has simply said I am being too fussy, and the paint looks great, but I know it’s there, and I wanted you to know as well.
So that’s about it. Asking price is $19500. I would REALLY prefer anyone who is thinking of purchasing this Kombi to come check it out first. There is NO WAY I would buy a Kombi sight unseen, so why should you. Please PM me with any queries that you may have, or you can try and contact me on my mobile 0437772512.
Cheers - Nathan
