Best extended sump for type 1 motor in a street beetle..
Ive been doing a bit of a search on the forum regarding extended sumps . Im building a 1916 motor for my '70 beetle and looking for some feedback in
regards to the best extended sump,brand,features and capacity etc.
My beetle wont be lowered majorly and will be sporting a racked look.I just want to try and get some feedback as to whats a good quality item and not
buy junk..hopefully your personal experiences will save me from making a uninfromed purchase..thanks in advance peoples!!

I have a cb performance small sump with a finer strainer in it..
they are great quality...
I would stay away form EMpI sumps...
as with most of their chinese copies... they will most probably leak....

Thanks LEE..I was looking for something like the CB performance sump..Something that has increased oil capacity aswell..the Pobjoy unit no doubt is a
good piece of gear but looks very limited in terms of increased oil capacity..thanks people

Do you by any chance have a part number or how many "quarts" capacity the sump is..Damn american imperial measurements or is it us lazy metric

Hi
the larger CB Performance sumps are excellent as they also help to cool the oil down and all the oil doesn't go to one side when You go round a
corner...
combined with a spin on oil filter.. is excellent for Your engine..

what do you need heaps of extra capacity for? The Pobjoy sump adds 400ml to the capacity and you will NEVER loose pressure or pick-up whether going
round corners or over bumps.

I was recommended the smallest of the CB Performance sumps by my engine builder Peter Debiasi plus a remote filter set up so I can service the motor
myself using a generic falcon ryco filter. Heat disipation of the oil through volume and surface area is a reason for me to run a rather large sump.

I have empi deep sumps on both of my cars and neither one leaks, one is two years old and the other is five years old.

Hi
I have a Gene Berg sump on my sons bug, it cops a hiding on speed humps etc. I really like the the special Berg attaching nuts, I'm not sure if other
sumps use this nut system but they work great.

If you building the enginer fron scratch, get the sump early and braze the pickup on, rather than using the hose clamp to hold it on.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

Definately will get the extended pick up tube braised..yeah I saw the hose clamp that holds it on..its a bit un-nerving knowing that you are relying
on an oil supply from your sump via a tube and hose clamp ..

The Stan sump or similar is all thats needed and its Australian Made !
Extra oil will not give extra cooling , it will just take longer to reach running temp.
The American / Chinese ones are mostly crap. Berg or CB are the exceptions..

Australian made stuff is usualy far sup
Berg ones are good , I have on 2 different cars but the do NOT stop oil surge during hard cornering.They require lots of internal mods to stop the oil
surge. Very dissapointing

What size oil pump are you running?
Maybe the pump is emptying the sump.
I run a small size pump and have truck loads of pressure at all rev levels.
IMHO oversize oil pumps are simply not necassary in our humble little motors.
I may be hailed down but years of racing and engine teardowns tell me what works.

For quality and something that works get the Pobjoy sump, it's proven itself on multiple race cars and it's machined out of billet alloy, and it's
Australian Made.

I use Berg or Scat that I modify. I agree with Colin that too big an oil pump is most likely the cause with oil surge issues if running a properly
setup deep sump.

we only use small pumps in our roundy race cars, but they do see high rpm around 8ooo.
Also lots of traction with large slicks and LSD
we had to section off the the inside of the Berg sump plus other internal mods

Sounds like your all over the problem, good work.
It,s all part of the fun i reckon, solving little issues to make our little bugs giant killers on the track.
Never used a Pobjoy sump, but lots of other people swear by them, so they must work.

I saw Onion's years ago that was similar to what Honey's talking about. 4 Qt Berg with diagonal baffles and flappers for surge control. Good for
over 9k.
