1200 Vs 1500 tranny


I've decided to go beetle tranny for manx but only have early tunnel types. I'm going to run 14x7.5 or 8 mags with 1600 twin port. Will 1500 tranny be a big difference (understand better handling) or should i just run 1200 until I'm better financed and experienced.

the main difference will be your gear ratios.

The axles can be changed either way

the 1200 gbox has a final drive ratio of 4.375:1 whereas the 1500 has a final drive ratio of 4.125:1
so the early gbox will pull bigger tires but isnt as strong as the 1500 type
I guess it would aslo depend on what stud pattern is on the front :cool:

It has discs with link pin set up so it has four bolt set up. Basically what I'm asking is what would you do in my situation 1500 or 1200. I have early tunnels and also have rear 4 bolt brakes to go on them or if i can you get a 1500 box.

I was in the same situation except with a 1500sp motor. I now run a 1500 transaxle with the short axles from the 1200 tranny. Means I can easily fit 205/65/15 on the rear and have better highway cruising. The 1200 was terrible in comparision and ran the 1500 at noticably higher rpms. The only thing I had to do was run the nosecone mount for the 62 bug and not the normal mount for the 1500 box as the hole in the body of the 62 is smaller than the later ones (hope that makes sense)

P.S The 1500 box cost me $150 so price wasn't a real issue. It's also a few years newer too.

Do I use the 1200 or 1500 hockey stick when I change the nose cone mount?

They both should be the same in relation to the mount and gear shift rod
I would stay with the 1500 one

I'm glad I put 1500 in my oval, gears are good. I left the axles long and had wheels made offset to fit perfectly under the guards.
The offset required means that the dish visible from hubcap side is same front and back. The front being standard 4.5 jj 15inch rims.

I should qualify what I said above. I didn't change the nosecone. Just the mounting bracket to the 1200 style. The 1500 style is slightly large (to glance at they look the same) and the rubber nub won't fit into the hole on the body. At least that is the problem I came across.
