There are some very nasty crashes in that footage. Some of them must have been fatal I'm sure. I'm so glad that we have much better safety equipment

NO They weren't mental... 
 
that is what it was like before Seat Belts and roll bars were invented... and no padded dashes either... 
and laminated glass NOT safety glass in those old US cars 
 
so, it was safer to be thrown out if you didn't have a padded dash or roll bar... 
or collapsible steering column...  YIKES 
 
and DOUBLE TROUBLE 
 
some early cars had a co driver?? in the passenger seat... 
now they were mental... ?? 
just sitting there waiting to be thrown out...
