Done a head gasket in EJ22
The motor still runs sorta fine, just rough on startup with a bit of coolant smell out the exhaust. Then when it gets hotter, it runs better still,
then starts overheating after 20 mins.
If I am to do the head gaskets, I would be wise to linish the surface of the heads also.
What success rate has anyone else seen from this procedure? I suppose just pop the heads off and check them with the side of a stainless steel ruler.

Trust it to go from bad to worse. I started it up today, and it ran rough for a minute, then started coughing and revving it was making it stall. I
would say the plugs and maybe the oxygen sensor are fouled now.
Do they have to fully dissassemble the heads to face them?

I saw those heads. Got them.
What is the recommendation for top end VRS gasket set in Melbourne? We have an account with Bursons at work, so I will give them a call in the
morning
I dunno if I should change the head bolts too?
If it was a turbo I would for sure. The workshop manual does not say you have to. Pretty cool tightening sequence.

I got the heads. Bargain. They really are fully factory reco. 100% cleaned, machined, valves done. Look like new, oiled and plastic sealed with
labels.

You done it yet Peter?
If not, as Rob says - don't lose track when doing the bolts. Hang up the phone before proceeding.

I can honestly say I've never encountered a more spastic head tensioning sequence than Subaru EJs have

I haven't got a gasket kit yet. I have spoken to Clive cams, and they can regrind the cams to increase midrange torque. With stock ECU.
