Beetle Virgin - Inspected 1st Beetle and have questions.

Hey guys,
I went and had my first look and drive of a beetle on the weekend and noticed there were a few rust spots here and there. The car was also running a bit rough but it hadnt been driven in a number of weeks.
There was a rust spot in the front apron, one in the rear and some little bubbles in the drip gutters.
Also, 1st gear seemed to be a little hard to find for me but was ok for the owner. Is this common?
Just wondering if these are major problems and should I therefore ignore this car and continue looking?
I was inspecting by myself (without the car knowledge of my old man) and using a guide to Beetles from the UK, but if anyone could give me a second opinion that would be much appreciated. The car is located on the NSW Central Coast.
Any help would be appreciated and if someone else could help me out with a second inspection please PM me.
Thanks.

Take the car to one of the VW repairers and get a pre purchase inspection, you will be in front regardless of the fact that it will cost you a few dollars.

If your buying an old car of any type be expected to spend money, but don't let that stop you.

As long as you accept that the car will have issues and you are prepared to see those issues through, then you will form a bond that will be hard to break. But if you think that an old beetle will be as good as your mate modern fridge (usually white, cold (a/cond) and efficient) car then you will be disappointed. Like all projects , you only get out what you put in. Good Luck
P.s Any question you can think off, someone on here will know the answer and their all pretty friendly.

I understand that these are not modern cars - in fact thats why I am attracted to the idea of owning one.And having my first drive of one the other day has got me excited!
I am just worried about the possibility of buying a car that looks good despite a few issues but that may end up costing me an arm and a leg to own...Having had no prior experience in VeeDubs I was concerned I could have been looking at a ticking timebomb. But perhaps I am being too cautious.I was trying to inspect without my emotions - had I not I would have a new car in the driveway hahaha
I should probably note that whatever car I buy will be a daily driver - hence why I dont want something that is going to spend more time off the road than on.

Thanks for the feedback and responses so far though...

What year model is it? Rust can appear in different places depending on the year model.

1968 1300 model.
Had a new German floorpan (in 2005) and that looked pretty good.

I know a bit about later models but I think the pre 70 models tended to rust at the bottom of the A-pillar or bottom of the door frame and in the heater channels. Also try and check under the battery.

Hmmm... 68 1300... the weird year/model combo for Australia.

68's were mostly 1500's... but the plant in Vic assembled some 67 spec cars and sold 'em during 68, which were 1300's... don't suppose you got pics of it by any chance so we could id it ???

Rust spots are bottom of A pillars (near where the bottom door hinge is), plus heater channels (the whole bottom edge each side), floor plan especially under back seat, rear quarters (between door and back wheel) and if it's a 68 or later then C pillars (just below the bottom corners of the back window). Also bottoms of doors, plus around the lower edge of engine bonnet, and back corners near the hinges on the front bonnet.

Trouble finding 1st I've found pretty common with 67 and earlier cars, but not sure if it's cos of their different shift lever or just being worn... never seen it in a 68 and later, even tho internals of the box are the same. Running a bit rough could just be a tune up, but we'd only be guessing... best take one of the guys up on offer to check it out if you can, or get to a mechanic that knows Beetle's.

:tu:

Oh and if you buy a Beetle, be prepared to have it for a VERY long time - got my 70 model in Year 12... had her almost 20 years now and would never part with her, even tho have a car as part of my deal with work. Old Volksy's have a way of getting into your blood real easy...

Thanks guys your information is much appreciated.I would have taken my old man who is reasonably cluey in this kinda stuff but sadly he flew to France for 6 weeks on the first date I could view it.such good timing!!!haha
I don't mind little problems but I'm not too keen on buying something that will fall apart or won't be able to enjoy.

The car is on carsales.com vehicle ID SSE-AD-238536
Some may recognize it perhaps or know something about it?Apparently won Best Engineered or Best Engine at 2005 VW Nationals.

I'm pretty keen on the car but want to know it's a good buy and what a good offer may be.
Thanks again everyone
