Does a Kombi gearbox fit a Type 3
Just wondering if anyone could tell me if a 2L gearbox will fit in a Type 3?
A mate is looking at the option of replacing the stronger 091 2L gearbox with his broken 1600 Type 3?

yes but some modifications are needed. I think the selector shaft is higher so it would need to run on top of the tunnel, but I have seen a kit
somewhere that places the box on an angle which allows the shaft to run in the stock position.
The engine might sit a bit angled though.
Mounts and brackets need to be fab'd up too. Bit of work but they are great boxes. Oh and you need a ratios to be changed to suit and that gets
expensive.
Might be more cost effective and less headache to get a nice standard type 3 (same as type 1) box built.

Thanks. Sounds like standard is the go. What about putting a 2L engine in a Type 3? Other than what you have just told me. Does it bolt straight onto
the box or does it need some sort of conversion plate?

2l engines can fit but you need to fab engine mount plus work out how to duct cooling air to the engine
the engines are different in size not just capacity .

bellhousing of std box would need some mods prob flywheel chnge or housing!
want any vw bits old but like me, Made in Germany!!!

yep a 200mm kep conversion flywheel and clutch would do it.
in terms of putting a type 4 engine into a type 3 is quite easy.
cross member, flywheel and clutch, exhaust?, air bellow. About it I think?
