356 Oil Cooler on 40hp case

Have been reading a little about this on thesamba, and wondered if anyone on here has put a 356 cooler on a VW?

I'm talking about the single relief style cases 1300 (F series and before)

Can it be done?
Anyone tried it?
Any good/better?

Reading online the NLA cooler seems to be the best one going, for me it would be a great way on increasing the cooling whilst maintaining a more period look, it also seems to improve airflow to the 3,4 side of the engine.

Cheers

Shaun

Hi Shaun

Anything for a 356 will cost dollars, you could easily fit a doghouse cooler and fan shroud to your car or an external cooler.

IT IS MORE THAN LIKELY THE BEST STANDARD OIL COOLER
but 356 Porsche parts are like Gold...
and probably very hard to find..

the Doghouse fan shroud/oil cooler is good for up to 2 litres
approx..

or an external oil cooler ..

Hi Steve,

Yeah I know that anything with a 'porsche' badge on it will cost more but i'd like to do something a little bit different from normal, as the car is supposed to represent a racing period of 1965 and before and the dog-house wasn't around. That said the 1300 twin port heads I have weren't around, and also the kadrons; but these are substitutes for okrasa or denzel heads and Solex 40 PBIC or PICB carbs.

Do you think the doghouse would be better?

Cheers

Shaun

thinking about it, the cost in coverting the old tin and getting a decent external cooler would be the same or more than buying a new 356 cooler.

Hi Lee,

The 356 parts arn't too bad to get, if I was getting an original one then maybe but i'm looking at the gucci aluminium ones.

Weight is also a factor with this so I would like to avoid an external set-up (waiting for the jeers on this one)

interesting read, this fella found the 356 cooler lowered oil temp but increased the 3&4 cylinder temps....

looks like I might just keep the stock cooler and see what happens

easy to go to late style doghouse cooler. i've done it a couple of times

just enlarge the two bolt holes in the case for the bigger bolts of the late cooler.....remove, drill and tap the stud on top of the case for the 3rd location on the cooler....also larger

order some "adapter" seals from vintage vee dub that accomodate the early case on on side and the late cooler on the other (i have some if they don't stock them at the moment)

change the fan housing, fan and rear engine tin to accomodate the doghouse coolers "exhaust"

bob's your uncle!

I had trouble free run with it like that

I like the cool factor but have to agree for engine longevety the dog house would not effect 3 & 4 like the stock early setup.

You can borrow a late 912 cooler from me and see how it goes if you like.
- don't see why there should be any overheating issues with 3 & 4 - the standard 912 runs about 90 engine horsepower without probs with much the same tinware. There are a couple of other 356 cooling tricks that might work on a race engine.

Hey Shaun, don't try to re-invent the wheel, listen to people who know!

Lance really knows his 'stuff'..........have a look at the 356 engine in my Cooper, that he helped [that's an under-statement] me build.

Cheers, Greg

Hi Lance,

I'd like to borrow the cooler and see how it runs, I don't get my engine back from Stan for a week or so I suspect but would love to come and talk to you about those 'tricks' on cooling, you have PM

Something wrong about putting a doghouse on the girl, it never overheated before with the stock cooler and I suspect it won't with a 356/912 cooler, my motor even though rebuilt will essentially be a reworked stock 1300 so I don't expect much change in running temps. So long as I have all the tinware nice and sealed i'm going to give this a try.

Cheers

Shaun

fuel for the fire, both Lance and a fella on this thread make a good point, that 356's and 912's ran these coolers at much higher speeds and HP and never had an issue over heating 3&4.
