Acually Guy, a lot of people commented to me how fast your water pumper was...and the only waterpumper in the "top VW Shootout", so thumbs up from
me!!.
I am sure more vids and pics will filter through as everyone arrives home.
|
Yeah, only joking Dave - seeing it from the other side these days having
spent 30 years as a dedicated aircooler - you look at a watercooled forum, they love the aircooled stuff (don't understand them, but always admire
them), but the recognition doesn't seem to go the other way.
Instead of sticking Subaru motors in bugs or Kombi's, we build Golf's to go out & smash STi's & EVO's - it's a lot of fun too & 100%
Volkswagen.

Race Report
Well , We have arrived home all safe and tired . I would like to say my congrats to all who attended the event and a big hats off to Craig and the
VWMA staff for the well organised weekend . I unfortunatley worked on my car all weekend just to keep it going but had a blast anyway . With all of
the preperation I did before I left , I still had some issues to deal with . I would like to thank all of the people that just piched in to help with
the transmission change on Sat , and the clutch swap on Sunday .
I was a little disapointed with the performance of my car due to the weather conditions but everyone was in the same boat and I am not making excuses
. I could not get the nitrous bottle pressure above 700 psi and I did not get a chance to put the big jets in to see what it could really do , but
still managed a best run of 6.7 @ 104mph . Hitting the wall due to the lack of control on my behalf was not real smart , however in 3rd gear @ 9000
rpm's and on the nitrous I was going to give my last run everything I had . I will now finish the new car in time for the first VWMA 1/4 mile event
in Feb next year , ROD.
More boost + More fuel = More power
1968 Beetle fastest run 8.96 sec @ 161 mph 4th Nov. 2001

Yes Ian, #11 the little polo struggled with DSG gearbox programming big time to put the power down through the front wheels. #04 was pretty well
sorted - all we have to learn how to do is remove 700kg's from her
Thanks for the Pic!

I didn't do many passes in my oval. I vowed to spend more time watching from the stands than the dummy grid this year. The little car with it's new
IDA set up and taller gearing ran faultlessly from Sydney and back with a best of 9:64@ 72.9 mph. Maybe I've chased away the gremlins that have been
plaguing me this year (or passed them on to the Carters).
I put together a small blog about the event on the ADVAN wheels website with a dozen or so pictures for anyone who is interested in the tales I

nice pics.... thanks to everyone for organising a great event.
i guess that doing a 7500rpm burn out with a standard pulley and you get a broken fan.... it actually broke the alternator stand in 2 in addition to
having the fan grenade.
the fins only got a little bent which is great news.
thanks to the wolfsburg guys who had a spare alternator post.
we pulled the fan off and installed the new alternator stand then went racing again.
eventually ran 8.96 @76mph.

Thanks to Craig and the Warwick track officials for yet again a successful event. We ended up having 3 cars competing and improvements made accross
the board kept everyone happy. Mark's manx knocked over a second off his previous times with the addition of some IDA's, an MSD and some suspension
tweaks. He was stoked with consistant mid 9 sec passes from his 1915 VW engine. The not so happy camper was Tony with his 2276 flat black manx. After
a few passes in qualifying running flat 8's and PB's, the engine seemingly nipped a bearing after the burnout and so will need to be checked out. My
new/old Blue 60 ran flawlessly all weekend, very happy she made it through the weekend running consistant 10.0 passes at 67 mph, slow yes, but for a
dunger oil burner and stock transmission ... 'ya gotta be happy with that'
As usual, my camera was hardly out of it's case

Wow, what a great weekend.
To everyone I met , chatted to or raced - Thank you, Thank You, Thank You!!!!!!
It is fantastic watching the VW scene grow. My only gripe is - Why couldn't the current VW Drag scene happen 30 years ago when I was in my prime?
Some of the memorable snapshots of the weekend for me were:
* The race with DB (i've been waiting for the opportunity for a long time and you couldn't wipe the smile from my face - even before the tree came
down - Thanks DB)
*The race with David OConnor. I rattled off a .409 reaction and bloody hell , David runs a perfect .400, not much to boast about there
(Congratulations David, excellent work) I want a re-match!!!
* The ever entertaining Rod., you have done something not many people can do. You have psyched me out. i'm scared to run beside you. I'll need a
bucket load of handicap on the tree to get far enough in front of you to stay out of trouble!!
* The sound of all the blown VW's at the meeting. Maybe we can arrange a Cackle Fest at Sydney Dragway in Feb? Now, that's something I would pay
money to see!!
I will have to run a few Sydney Dragway meetings to get some practise for all the runs and re-runs I intend to have in Feb.
Craig, Thank you to you and all associated with the event - as everyone there noticed, the VW Drag scene is growing

The weather sucked! But was a good weekend
Although the following photo doesn't show, the first wind/shower sent the tarp flying. Rumour has it that silver KG that was staying with the Das
Resto Haus group copped a nice dent in the rear quarter from a tree branch or something?
Some misc. shots:
And for some reason my partner Meg felt so inclined to take this:
Lol, whose arse is this? Meg took it in dispute of the lady walking in the way of the Warwick bagpipe band she was trying to video haha.
We bought some more warm stuff on saturday for the evening, then we were set. Mind you, the cheap motel was heaven on Sunday night compared to being
in that open cold breeze. Dam weather stopped my going offroad with Smiley to the lookout.

Hi Ian,
haha, after the convoy cruise and parking, and then just when i started to drive off from the park in Warwick leaving the dubs it was running like a
turd.
A block off on one of my vacuum pipes on my inlet manifold popped off, giving me a huge 8mm wide vacuum leak lol. I pulled over just before hitting
the road and Smiley and I got stuck in and patched it back up.
Other than that, the whole weekend i had massive flat spot issues due to the dreaded 009 (my opinion anyways). I will make corrections to my carb (the
old' pop rivet in the butterfly trick) to sort it out and have better take offs without that carrying on it does. i have x130 main jet at the moment
which should suffice fueling wise, but it runs lean during coasting (again no vacuum advance correction because of 009 to suit air/fuel mix of
emissions based 34 pict 3), so the rivet should hopefully sort that out. I could just get a SVDA dissy but i don't plan on running on this carb for
too long.
gotta be the 009 causing the issues. Smiley and I wound open the accelerator pump to full (has fresh diaphragm fitted) and we were still getting
hesitation from idle).

WPVW RACE REPORT
well after 3 months of preparation , including the intense last 3 weeks of 7 days a week 16 to 17 hours a day , all of the WPVW cars went really well
.
many thanks must go to the members of team WPVW for all their effort and assistance in preparing 5 cars for this event . A special thanks must go to
my father Allan ( poppy Penrose ) for his immense support and for all the assistance in machining engine parts for me . Without the support of my team
these cars would not have made it to Warwick
My turbo oval ran 6.33@113mph , Chris Bolton in his new turbo bug ran 6.71@101mph , Ben Ford in his supercharged bug ran a new PB of 7.04@100.3mph ,
Joe Tanti in the WPVW sports sedan ran 8.5@82mph and Cindy Hurst raced my turbo cabriolet as her turbo beetle did not get finished for this event .
Cindy ran a 10.5@65mph
I managed to hire a car transporter for all 5 of our cars which really took the stress away of towing all 5 vehicles to QLD and back . I then hired a
25 seater mini bus which was just awesome as team members that had been up working all of those late nights were able to get some well deserved sleep
on the trip up there
Many thanks goes to Craig and his wife Colleen for putting on the event once again , many thanks go to the track organisers and members of the Warwick
Drag Racing Club for all their efforts , and many thanks go to all competitors and spectators because without you , we just dont have an event
a now just for a tease , I am laying on a beach outside the Sofitel on Denaru Island , Fiji where I have bought my daughter Brittany for her first
overseas trip . I am laying on the beach planning VWMA drags at WSID in february 2012 , see you all there . Wayne
PS will put pics up of Warwick when we get back
