Fitting bonnet and decklid seals
What is the best type of lube to help this job? Dont want anything that will harm either the paint or rubber in the long term. Copper grease? WD40?
washing up liquid?

Glycerine, it's harmless, and washes of with water.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

rubber grease, you can get it at repco, supercheap etc.
or,
Ky jelly, you can get that in the supermarket these days. It's water based and slippery.
I prefer the grease because if anything gets trapped in those small metal grooves I would prefer it was something that keeps rust at bay rather than
promoting it.

iI have always used washing up detergent mixed with water
nice and slippery..
