Vanagon Ratios
Hey all.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the gearbox ratios are for an early model, aircooled 4 speed Vanagon?
Been looking on the net but can't seem to find much.
Any help appreciated
Thanks

Those codes should tell you what the trans ratios were from the VW factory.
"early vanagon"s had a basic 091 trans with the shift mechanism on the side of the nose cone.
I have seen some with 091 ratios (4.57 CW&P and 0.883 fourth) and some with a taller 0,816 fourth.
The later 4 speed trans had the shift through the side of the main case(much better!), just like the 5 speed
and usually had the 4.83 coarse tooth CW&P and either the 0.82 or 0.85 ratio.
Lots of aftermarket and genuine parts available for these 4-speed trans now.
Excellent base for any high performance application.(if you like making shift linkages).
...although the coarse tooth 4.83 is not as good as the earlyer 4.86 and 4.57.
