Probably be flamed for this, but its good that they called the unions bluff. While I can understand the demand for new wages, there has to be a point where strikes etc are just going to hurt the company and hence its ability to employ people.

But then the $5million payrise is a bit rich, don't think thats fair either.

lets see what happens. but it may reach a point where the unions loose a big chunk of jobs, instead of getting a payrise...

yep
a bit rich with the 'approved' performance related payrises for the exec's
however as we 'all' like cheap as fares and to remain competitive with asian airline co's and others coming in here and offering cheap as fares something's got to give
and with fair work involved now i cant see all parties happy
one things for sure lot of unhappy customers
who fly n who have freight transported
we will see things disappearing off differing shelves all over the country

Holy crap... currently travelling in China for work, and MAN am I glad I'm not dependant on Qantas to get me back home again !!!

There are so many business opportunities over here, I think Joyce is right in trying to focus on Asia. Granted he's possibly not going about the best way, but then the unions are a bit unrealistic also... I mean who's salary/wages HAVE kept pace with CPI the past few years ???

If it wasnt for the laborers, the corporate fat cats wouldnt have a job.
No execs deserve millions of dollars in pay rises,I dont care who you are or what you do for the company

Like the banks. 'Oh we're saving you thousands by helping you'. Bullshit! Thats why they make 3 billion dollar profits

Qantas are losing millions, and thats great. Lets hope they wake up to themselves and pay the workers what they want

Fat chance of that happening!

As an ex QANTAS employee i have been there during industrial action. Generally industrial action response from a company is to setup the company to continue trading, bringing in money. While trying to brake the union by locking workers out and using SCAB labour to keep the company ticking over. What Joyce has done at the moment is only hurting the company some how the unions/associations are not being talked about. As for a pay rise when i worked at QANTAS you had to fight to get a CPI payrise. If you are not getting a CPI payrise you are going backwards. Joyce should hold his head in shame for the way he has treated his passengers, as alot of these may never fly QANTAS ever again.

From my reading of the EBA's - Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA) they want a more than a CPI increase. They are talking 5% over CPI at around 3% - 3.5%
That said this is not just the ALAEA - I think there is about 3 outher unions negotiating the new EBA's

It is also about the "other" requests
* A guarantee that no changes be made to current work practices including changes which improve productivity or that are in line with developments in modern aircraft technology.
* Introduction of a time serving classification structure where workers receive additional pay increases based on years of service rather than merit or qualifications

To think that the QANTAS board is handling this well is hard to fathom
As for approving the executive paypackets................................. well its all in the timing isnt it.

But, as has been said, we all want cheap flights.
No one wants to pay a premium price for a similar service.

I am REALLY glad its not me up there trying to make a decision

When you see on the news that the top aircraft engineer earns $62,000 a year, no wonder they are striking, all the pressure and responsibillity, to remain compeditive they will cut the maimtanence and farm it out to a cheap Asian country , people have short memories, i saw a ribbon cable that had been cut and put back together with a stapler, just think what the underlying thing is about this and remember without the union your kids would be still working down the mines at the age of five.

I think that Paddy is just being childish. There was no need cancel all flights. Just sort it out in the arbitration court.

As for Aussies not using Qantarse. It's got nothing to do with cheap fares, it's just a sh!t airline.

62G sounds alright for standing around maybe these union workers should leave and work in a real work place where they are expected to maximise productivity until they make there own job redundant!

Qantas has been training scab labour for six months now. This shutdown has been planned for maximum disruption on a national scale. Joyce should be dragged over the coals by the ACCC for not disclosing this at the AGM as it will dramatically effect the value of the company for at least 6-12mths after any outcome. Joyce puts $5 million in his back pocket and tells the guys that keep YOUR plane from falling out of the sky to get get f*@ked. Nice job if you can work the old boys network. Name three things that Joyce has done to deserve that type on increase? There are people out there who are really making a difference and saving lifes and helping the community who get paid a pittance compared to this clown. Time we recognised real value in the community not just capital greed and monetary value. My2c

As usual, the job as aircraft engineer needs to be valued far greater than $62,000, plane crashes and you are held accountable, far more responsability than the irish tosser that is trying to run qantas at the moment

Being an aircraft maintenance engineer structures aka a sheetie this is not regarding the AMEs they have signed of their EBA this is regarding the LAMEs (licenced aircraft maintenance engineers) their wages aren't and haven't been 62,000 a year for the last ten years. These engineers sat on their behinds when HEAVY MAINTENANCE sydney was shut down. They have priced QANTAS maintenance out of the market. The problem with QANTAS is their are to many LAMES meaning that the it is an upside down triangle with to many at the top. ALAEA have never supported any other union in the place, always back dooring deals for themselves. Again i feel sorry for the passangers stranded in all these airports around the world. As for LAMES you have killed the airline for everyone and you will be getting no support from me and most of the other AME's.

They said on the news that qantas booked hundreds of hotels around the world, ON THE DAY OF THE AGM, what a coincidence that they had had a meeting to lockdown the company the day after.

The whole theory that qantas is trying to create an overseas owned airline is getting frighteningly possible. Next thing you know, qantas will go into liquidation and a anonymous new overseas airline will buy the planes and equipment for dirt cheap . . . .

Qantas . . . And I used to call Australia home . . . Hmm the song could still work.
