Hi guys,

a mate of mine gave me a set of twin 40mm IDF webers and I was wondering if they would work ok on a 1640 TP with a standard cam???

yes - 40's are good for a 1600

BUT - that said, it all depends on the jetting - and that can be changed.

I reckon they need 32 vents, 135 mains and 50 idles

Others may tell you smaller.
Have a look and tell us what is in there

I would run 28MM vents other wise you will take away the driveability of the engine, will not pull from down low.

I would go with the carbs too. I agree 28 vents for a otherwise stock 1600. Would really benifit from a good exhaust and then headwork.

Nope :)

You actually need the carbs off to fit or remove the engine.

mmm.............. putting the manifolds on is easy

getting the 34Pict manifold off is the hard part

Shoot me...................... but you also need to think about Weber Windows as well

I happily cut a hole in the side to get to the mixtures and idles.

That is better done with the motor out

The other problem is if you have "short" studs.
I had some manifold studs that were VERY short and I needed to change them

I have 44IDF's in a 36 HP engine bay and have no problems tuning them without cutting holes in my car.

Really ???

Even with the windows cut in had to be a contortionist to tune my 44 IDF's... I used to get the back of the car up on stands to be able to get me arm up under the guard easily and reach in. Ditto for when changing plugs.

Am thinkin you must have really tiny hands or somethin....

You guy's must be a bunch of shiela's....I tune them regularly without holes cut. Mind you it makes for some interesting language.

Certainly easier with access holes, especially for #'s 1 & 3 sparkplug change.

Fit IDA's, heaps easier for access....lol

Hmmm.... must be a thing with different manifolds or something... with IDF's in my '70 engine bay, no way in hell would you get the idle jets out without the access holes.

:?:

But oh well - EFI now, so it's just sit in the driver's seat and play with the laptop for me !!!

I have had a 70 model beetle with 44 IDF'S with no body butchery along with the worst example with my 60 model with 44 IDF'S again and have had no problems tuning them , and my hands are big.

So I checked out the jets on the weekend, it has 140 mains, 45 idle and 32 vents. I should hopefully get the manifolds and linkages on the weekend, what is the likelyhood that it will run ok with the current jets?

It'll run, but I'd expect larger idles will be needed.

Yeah, they are 40's I checked a few times, I will give it a go then change them later. just trying to get it on the road at the moment.

Do you know anywhere in Sydney where I can buy the jets / Vents?

Hi again,

So i finally received the empi inlet manifolds and went to fit them this weekend and had some issues.
firstly the studs were too short and secondly the manifolds need a fair bit pushing to get them past the tin wear, so I decided to pull the engine out to fit them.
removed the engine replaced the studs with longer ones then fitted the manifolds, all going well so I thought I better check the webers mounted ok before I put the engine back in. To my surprise the webers hit the fan shroud, I am using 40mm IDF's and I thought they should go straight on. has anyone had any issues in the past? do i need a different fan shoud?
One thing I need to point out is the the webers are quite old (manual chokes) and were originally off a mates Gemini, I would have thought that 40mm IDF's are all the same? any thoughts?

And it'll still be tight, sometimes needing panel beating. Best with a 36hp style fan housing, but then the replacement ones still often need work for German compatibility :)

Not all manifolds are created equal.

I actually cut the both sides off my fan shroud to get my 40 idfs on my baja, we then patched it up and painted it. looked like balls though.

ok thanks guys, I have had a look at some photos online of engine bays with the webers and most of them seem to have a seamless fan shroud, mine has a seam which sticks out, maybe its an old one. I will buy a new dog house one this week and see how I go.
If I block off the chokes does the engine still start ok?

Yep, just remove the assembly and preferebly cover the area with a blanking plate.

Agree with matt, 50idles and maybe 135 mains with a 28mm vent, then with a little head work and exhaust 32mm vents and 140 mains.
