Blue Slip for US Karmann Ghia
Hey guys,
I've got 1959 Karmann ghia lowlight comming from the US and it's been fully restored. Just wanted to know what are the changes that will need to be
made before I go for the blue slip or do you think I can go for the blue slip straight away when I pinckney it up from the dock when it lands. I was
thinking maybe I wouldn't have to change anything since everything is in 100%working order with no rust and that hopefully the inspector wouldn't be
focusing on the nitty gritty small things. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

First thing you need to do is make sure you have approval to import it. I think it is DOTARS that you apply through for that.
You will then need to change the headlights over to RHD as well as getting parking lights in them. Blinkers may also need to be changed.
There may be more but that is all I can think of at the moment.

Yep got the import approval papers however concerned about the parking lights and blinkers because from my belief I wouldn't need it due to the car
not requiring one when it was made eg seat belts etc

ring the rta tech support line they will give the right details. i think you will find that the lights will have to be done to match australian spec.

The headlights definitely have to be done. Because of the opposite side of the road driving, the light beam would be focussed towards oncoming drivers
here.

Nah. Both the US lights dip to the right, and both Aus lights dip to the left.
You will find it will just be the outer lens that will need replacing, as it is the ripples in the glass that do the dipping. I would assume
replacement glass lens would not be too expensive.

You'll need a weigh bridge ticket to get it blue slipped as well. They charge you more for an import blue slip also.

A pair of 12V sealed beam headlights locally will cost you about $10-15 each. They take about 5 minutes to change.
Check if you have 6 or 12V
Check if you have relays fitted, and then you can upgrade to Halogen lights.
If this is stuff you cant check, then it would be a wise idea to put it all in the hands of the Blue slip mechanic, and get them to make it all
happen. This is easy stuff. If the car is all restored, then about $1000 and it should be all registered.

headlight when my car is 6V set up. Really appreciating the input and advice guys.

Mate of mine bought a Karmann Ghia over from California a few years ago, he had to fit new headlights, tail lights and ADR approved seatbelts to get
it passed.

ok notes taken. But I confirmmed with RTA that since the car is model 59 then I wouuldnt need a seat belt due to the seat belt law not being out yet
so technically I wouldnt need one for blueslip.

But it was not sold and registered originally in Australia without seatbelts, so your vehicle does not apply.
If it was sold and registered with no seatbelts in Aus before 1965 (as my car was), and has never been unregistered or modified, then it has no
requirement to have them. ADR4 was based on Australian Standard E35.
You will have to have seatbelts fitted to your import vehicle.

when i did mine many years ago it was:
headlights
seatbelts had to be of australian standards
yellow parkers had to be gone(later model)
red taillights had to be changed
windscreen had to be of australian standards
that was about it
the engineer puts a mod plate on it, lo! or something like that
then just register it
Rule number 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Find an engineer who knows vws as the quote i had from other people were just absolute b/sh#t

You can run the headlamps in series.. 6v + 6v = 12 volts..
BUT
they are LHD headlamps... and dip into the oncoming traffic...
so will need to be changed...
red blinkers are illegal in Australia..
I can't see any problems with amber parkers...
I have parkers in My amber blinkers on My guards... on my beetle..
safety glass windscreens are usually illegal but who looks at them?
I have seen later model cars from japan..
they cut the seat belts in half, to be replaced
tyres were not aust approved.. so had to be replaced..
can't remember what else.. stupidity I think...
