1303 Fuel and Ventilation
Hi All,
The fuel smell in my Beetle needs to be fixed.
Now firstly, I know that it is an old Beetle and so it will smell more than a modern car, but I know it can be better. The last time I drove it in the
day for over an hour, and by the end I was dizzy with the fumes.
So apart from replacing the vent hoses is there any other tricks that can be recommended?
Secondly, where does the fuel vent hose feed to? One obviously feeds back into the tank, but the other loops up and runs along just underneath the
fresh air vents before dropping back down and the last I can see it goes under the car on the passenger side. Photo below shows where it
disappears.
Bonus question:
What is the mystery cable in the photo below:
Second bonus question.
Whilst investigating my fuel vent I spotted some loose plastic air pipe on the passenger side underneath the aerial. I pulled it out because it
wasn't attached to anything, but it appears that it goes into the dashboard. There is an identical setup on the driver's side.
Where is this supposed to attach from and to? Is it part of the heater system (which I have disconnected anyway)?

The hoses are the demister
Down in the footwell, peel back the carpet and you will see a take off that the hose connects to

I would say any beetle with 3 point seats

I'll have to lift up the metal footplate and have a look.
Current plan is to be at Boris' picnic day.
The cannister would be under the rear fender wouldn't it?
Mine was May 74, did have three point seatbelts (or do you mean three point seat bases?), but no sign of a cannister, or if there was, it has long
since been removed. Better double check that before I make a bigger idiot of myself.

Hi
I've had a leak in the filler hose on a few bugs, it can act like a wick and not actually drip but still stink.
Have you ever had the tank out of the car? It could have rust hole or seam could be leaking.
The elbows that run of the tank to the filler neck can also perish and leak

The cole I'm talking about is right next the the bottom door hinge
There is a hole about 3" x 3"

Thanks Steve, I was thinking it was time to pull the tank out, get someone to weld up the unused steering column clearance on the tank like you've
had done for the orange bug, strip out the entire trunk area and fix the rust and repaint, fix the wipers, fix the washer bottle etc etc etc.
Because we all know that these things never end (unless you pay for a full body off restoration).
On reflection that work might all have to wait for the new year.
Barry, given the almost impossible task of joining those hoses back up and the fact that I'm not running heaters, I think it's time to plug up the
holes in the heater channel. My interor has existed in a semi stripped out state for the last few years, which is clearly not helping.
I'd wish for a Chip Foose to come into my life right about now, but I don't know he'd finish the car in the way I'd like it finished.
