Tail light lenses required for 1971 1302 S Beetle
Tail light lenses required for 1971 1302 S Beetle
Our lenses are faded. I would like to replace them. I notice that some websites have them for sale cheap, and note them as LH and RH?
I suppose they are the ones called "Euro style"
Where has anyone bought them as a good quality item that fits and does not fade in months? What model exactly are they called overseas?

Hi Pete
its hard to know if they are any good unless they have Hella on them and then they are like GOLD...
I had a set of mexican ones that kept fading and I kept painting the top with amber model paint.. until they cracked
another set I bought lasted a few months before they just cracked..
I have bought off ebAy.. CIP1 - and other places..??
so can't remember where I got the ones I have on now..
they look great... but have no numbers or names on them?
I should have labeled where I got them from..
maybe these were CIP1 ??
I was told that they must be acrylic , not plastic...??
they are called tombstone lights in the USA...
and AMBER/ RED or AMBER/RED/CLEAR were only used in 1968-70 in the USA..
they had similar lights in 1971-72 but they are about 30mm longer...
so they don't fit our lights...
I have some new rubber gaskets for them... lol

actually they were red in the USA,..
where blinkers stop and tail are ALL red....
so long as they are amber/red/clear..
euro.. and 68-70 models...
I have been looking at places in the USA...
http://www.airheadparts.com 111 945 241m lenses x 2
lenses are the same both sides.. but the housing and rubber gaskets are left and right...

Are you trying to find the original red/amber ones with no reverse lights? I wish you luck
THere used to be a supplier in Europe that stocked them,
They weren't Hella but were still good quality units.
Maybe try VWheritage in the UK.

I'm in Melbourne. PM me with a price. I suppose it would be about $20 extra for postage and packing?

Reverse lights weren't original to it Aus didn't get them till 1972, and you will most likely find if you pop the lenses off there wont even be
globes in there.
The non reverse light lenses havent been available for years so people just replace them with reverse light style, car gets sold new owner blissfully
unaware or tearing their hair out trying to get ghost reverse lights working.

Hey I just went out and checked, and you are right Joel. No reverse lights. The lens has it, but there is no globes.
I wonder if any roadworthy mechanics have pinged people for it?
So lenses without reverse lamps are fine.

I was confused, but now sorted.
The lenses would suit, as our Beetle does not have reverse switch or globes, so the reverse light bit is irrelevant.
How much for the lenses, I would pay $20 for post and packaging to Melbourne to be fair.
