2010 VW Toureg with no engine number??
Was at local garage today and they had a 2010 VW Toureg registered in Western Australia.
The owner has moved to Scone NSW and the engine number needs to be seen for NSW rego transfer...
BUT .. NO engine number to be seen..
had taken metal/stainless steel pipes and rubber hose and air cleaner off..
but still NO Number... VW Australia weren't helpful..
so the Mechanic said..
Owner of the Toureg isn't happy ..

Its up to the owner to clean and show the inspector where his engine number is and the inspector just checks the numbers.
If the owner doesnt know where his engine number is. he can pay a hourly rate to find it.

it's a bit rough though when the manufacturers representative can't tell you where the number is, surely they have to identify it when first
registered.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

VW Australia manager was telling the Mechanic where it was..
BUT it wasn't there... and He took pics as He took pipes hoses and air cleaner off the car..
still wasn't there...
Not sure what they did in WA...
Maybe New car engine number was given by VW Aust when it was sold new...???
and Maybe the owner has to foot the bill Ian...
[most probably]

Probably not looking in the right spot.
He should have uses the approval number on the compliance plate to get the correct road vehicle descriptor sheet. This then gives all the info for the
vehicle and a grid location for the engine number it also give and example of what engine number should look like.
In this case it should be CASD %12345 for 150kw engine or CASA %12345 for 176kw engine should also be located on grid 2 location K-11 Right at front
of engine in the middle.
Not that hard really.

you are right vdu88a, ,these numbers are hard to see and are matrix stamped so you can hardly feel them let alone see them.......try finding the
number on a 128kw T5...fun time I assure you........and I have never seen a engine number missing from a vw delivered car in this country....my take
not looking in the right place too

The Mechanic said that Ian...
[not supposed to take anything off]
but the Owner wants to re register the car in NSW...
which needs the engine number checked...
NOW whether the local Mechanic was Looking in the Correct area... I have No idea... I think it was just above the gearbox He was looking at??? on the
LHS of the engine..

Doesn't the Owners' Manual tell you where the Vehicle Identification Data is located? This includes the Type Plate, the Engine Number, the VIN and
the vehicle data sticker.
I would also think that ringing VWGA's headquarters in Botany (soon moving to Chullora) would not work as they are basically an administration
office. Nice shiny foyer and office cubicles but that's about it. Surely the mechanic should have phoned the nearest VW dealer and spoken to the
service manager? For Scone the nearest dealer is Woodleys Motors at Tamworth, 200 Marius St. The Service phone is (02) 6763 1500.

I had an Audi 5E which I had to re-register in NSW some years ago. It didn't have an engine number stamped on it and I had to buy a set of stamps and
stamp it by hand to get it through. It seemed a bit silly, as the only evidence that the engine number I stamped on it was correct was the previous
registration label.

Spoke to the Mechanic today..
Toureg still there.. TDI
He said that the manager at VW Australia rang Him today to tell Him again where the number was...
He Did however say that VW just used the stick on Barcode
engine number that is stuck on the plastic timing case.. !!
with ALL the plastic bits and pipes and hoses back ON...
there is no way You can see any part of the engine block...
the car has been re registered in Western Australia.. lol
after 5 hours of looking for the engine number....
which the owner was billed for....
and will be confirmed by the POLICE ...
that there Is No engine number...
and then its back to Volkswagen Australia
they faxed a pic of where the engine number was supposed to be... but that engine had none of those pipes and hoses on top of it.... [which were alltaken off]??

it maybe just dirty as its a 4wd, the owner can still look for it, or the inspector just red stamps the paper work the car does pass the inspection
and they book it in at the pits and the rta charges about $550 for the trouble
I dont know why they bloody put the numbers in so hard of a spot to find.

The 'manager' of Volkswagen Group Australia is a woman, Anke Koeckler. I doubt very much that the mechanic spoke to her. If the manager was a he, it
was someone else.
Get him to ring the Tamworth VW dealer service boss - they work on them; staff at the HO at Botany do not.
