1966 Squareback Project updated 4/5/13

Just got myself the 66 Squareback that was on here for ages. The pan and running gear has all be striped down and restored with new brakes, shocks, cv's, rebuilt 1600. Now time to strip down the body and make it look flash again. Not sure what look im going for yet plenty of time to sort it out.

Yeah just got the lease on the factory for my trailer business. Its only 180sqm but only cost $250 a week. There's also a huge outdoor area which is all fenced in, perfect for storing all my VW finds......

The pan was off a 72 Fasty, then they had and engineer to fab up the horns from the old pan.
Shit load load of work was done.

I don't know why you did that way around?

much easier, quicker and stronger to go SA frame and graft on IRS brackets sourced from a IRS frame and not using after market brackets.

unless you go to the extreme and splice the SA "tuning fork" in half bringing it back to factory sheet stampings then stitch them back together on the IRS frame.

Just some updated photo's of the work thats been done over the last month. I managed to find a local guy that has restored many cars over the years to straighten the body. Nothing too major but did have alot of small dings that needed filler, no rust which I am happy about. Last weekend I finally got it etched and primed. Now im in the process of blocking back the guide coat. I now have huge respect for panel beaters, this shit is hard and dirty work.

Satori, this looks great so far. There are not too many of these older wagons in the West. It would look awsome as a panelvan...I am looking forward to seeing how it comes out.

I finally got around to preping the car ready for paint. Man it takes soooo long just to getting it to painting stage and then there's sanding and buffing. I can see why 2 pac is the way to go, instant shine. All went with out too much hassle. I ended up spending twice as much on paint as couldnt get the right colour. The little colour swatches totally look totally different when sprayed out. I would still go lighter if I had more time. But pretty happy with the colour.

hey satori... mate credit to you. whats the colours. is it like a deep cream? ok dont take this the wrong way... if i had to be critical of only one thing it would be how you finished the black paint down the front pillar... the angle thing:dork: haha i just would have cut it straight or extended it down:kiss:
still love it though.
cheers matty

Yeah it does look like it comes down quite abit on an angle but most of it is behind the windscreen rubber. I checked out so many photo's of 2 tone paint jobs and really didnt like the ones where it was cut off straight, it just looked odd. The below pic is the look im after......

i like the way the two tone finishes on the pillar, blends nicely and will be nicly hidden behind the window rubbers

can you show/tell me where (from your research) the colour changes around the gutter line - I've always been between opinions (with myself) if the colour change should happen inside or outside the gutter, I painted one car with the roof colour up and over the gutter line and one right on the top edge of the gutter line...

ps: great looking square so far, looking forward to more progress... cheers Ben

Its been a long time since any updates. I got really lazy and pissed off with the build for a few months. Just kept hitting a brick wall every time I tried to finish something. Always not having the right bolts or the thread being stuffed. Anyway ive got the ball rolling again, so should be ready within the next month. These pic's are from a couple of months back when I first cut the paint back. Its was a very happy moment to finally see all the hard work pay off. It turned out amazing.
