Prefix

Any chance that it is an AH which would be a 1600 Type 1
Not aware of their being as AR.

Hmm... how about AD... a D is closer in shape to an R than what H in my opinion.

No matter tho - AD's again would have been a 1600 Type 1 in their original form.

AR were 1300 engines made between 1st aug 73 and 31st july 74 in germany...

AB were also 1300 engines 1972

AD were 1972 1600 engines...

as You may know... getting an engine number off someone..
and the number is correct isn't a good possibility..
many people either leave out a digit or get the letters wrong
lol

cheers

Stop referencing American sites for aussie cars.
We used a different bunch of engine codes to them.

As above AR and AB were aussie 1300s which US never got so as far as they are concerned they don't exist.

More American spec info, about 2% of that applies aus.

It started out life as 1300 twin port in a 74 1300 standard bug, not Lbug but if its been apart its probably 1600 or bigger.

77mm twinport heads haven't been available for decades, and similar story with the p&c.
Given the 1600 heads and p&c bolt straight on, are cheaper and give a capacity boost thats the way most end up but you won't know till its pulled down.

You can usually ignore what the engine lid says after 4 decades.

Which dash does it have?

Original DPD/volkswerks Flatscreen units like that in RHD are like rocking horse crap as the only markets that really used them were Japan and Malaysia/Phillipines area.

Gilmore Enterprises and I.C.E A/C in the US make new ones in LHD.
It may be worth shooting them an email as I know they do Lbug systems in RHD.

If I can throw in my two cents worth, AR is an aussie 1300 twin port engine out or a 1974 model (Aug '73 on build date) 1300 (ball joint front end with swing axle rear)
and would have had dual pre heater and alternator as standard from the factory.
Cheers Dave

I wish you best of luck with that one.
Again though, shoot Gilmore an email as they may do a RHD KG one too.
