Australian VW History - Expanded and Updated

The Australian VW History pages on the Club Veedub website have been completely rewritten and expanded.

* Twice as big (and, hopefully, interesting) as before, with much more detail
* Updated to the end of 2011
* Annual year-by-year model totals for every VW sold in Australia
* Lots of Australia-specific photos, most of which you hopefully won't have seen before. Click on the photo thumb to enlarge.

If you want to know about Volkswagen's history in Australia, this is the place.

All feedback and suggestions welcome! Enjoy.

Haven't read it all as yet...

1960-70 so far... interesting 31 karmann ghias sold in 1965
and 5 in 1966... must have been special orders for so low quantities??
plus I didn't know any were sold after 1961...

Andrew Cowan broke a drive shaft on the first night of the Southern Cross Rally. Between Newcastle and Gloucester I think.

The Scirocco at the Sydney Motor show was silver. From memory I think that 5 or 6 were imported.

What's this Mk1, Mk2 Golf shit? They were never called that!

A good reason that they didn't import the GTI in 1977,'78 is because Volkswagen didn't make them in RHD.

I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

Just click on my name in the articles it takes you straight to my email address - editor@clubvw.org.au

Be keen to hear if there are any more errors - thanks. That old book was full of them and these pages are the latest 'incarnation' of the story. I guess it will never be perfect but each time it can be less wrong.

Thanks Phill I was remembering that Scirocco photo you took and thought it was blue (still looks slightly bluish!) I've fixed it.

The August 1976 issue of Modern Motor does a test of the Scirocco; it refers to a 'solitary' Scirocco imported for evaluation. As the motor show car is not the same one, I can only say 'at least two' were imported until more info comes to hand.

I suppose Lennox Motors thought they could convert the GTI to RHD if it was landed before '79. But LNC wasn't interested.

I wouldn't take any notice of that.

Read this article by Allan Whiting.
Page 8 he goes on about a "non standard" cover for the distributor. They were standard on Australian syncros.
