Just a quick one, Does a 72 super beetle have front disk brakes?
Also is it easy to lower the front, new struts or can you just change springs?

Adjustable coil overs for the front to be lowered.
Yes to the front disc brakes, drum brakes on the rear if everything is still stock.

You can just change springs but if you want more options in wheel fitment you need to make some more space inside the guard by using either a coilover
like mentioned above or another option is getting hourglass shaped springs if the budget is tight. Have a look at topline suspensions website.
